Hello all. I recently purchased a couple shotguns for my 8 almost 9 y/o daughter. I am curious about them. First is a Savage, Hiawatha Model 594. It is.410ga. 2 1/2 and 3 inch chamber. Probably birch stock and shoulder stock cut way down. It is in good working order and decent but well used shape. Choke is not stamped on barrel. I assume its a full choke but do not know. Any insight? Also how does one correctly measure barrel length? Include the chamber or not? I will probably add a recoil pad and Hunters SafetyCourse is in our future. She already has bb gun and single shot .22. Second gun is full sized Stevens .410 3 inch chamber single shot. Model 94C. This gun appears older and has walnut furniture. It too is in good working order. Again the choke is not stamped on barrel. I gave $50for both and that included almost 50 rounds of ammo. Any insights into these shotguns is requested and appreciated.

It's hard to say on the choke, I think most had modified to full depending on what they ordered when it was new. Some say slugs are ok, I'd be hesitant to use them myself. It's likely more of a bunny rabbit and birds setup.

For barrel length, close the action, cock it, and drop a wooden rod down until it rests on the breach face, mark the rod where it exits the barrel or any PERMANENTLY attached barrel device. That mark is the barrel length.

Thanks. Yes small game rigs for sure. I have other .410s too. I guess I was wondering if anyone knew what the bore at muzzle would measure on a full.choke vs mod etc..

copy/paste from another site

The Shotgun Book by the late Jack O'Connor lists the following regarding choking for the .410 bore shotgun. Data include (in order): boring, bore diameter, muzzle diameter, constriction, and percent at 25 yds. in 30-inch circle:

Full Choke, .410, .396, .014, 70
Modified, .410, .405, .005, 60
Imp. Cyl., .410, .408, .002, 50
Cylinder, .410, .410, None, 40

Ndindy, thanks! That info fits the bill! My kid And I will hunt together. Same ammo. Similar guns. Should help her along. Lots of game has fallen to the .410 over the years. Will teach her to learn range of her firearm.
