Savage/Stevens model 200 long action...

I am just curious if anyone out there has this "low" budget rifle. I just picked one up new in .300 win mag along with sturdier rings/mounts, not the cheapo's from the package deal. Along with a 3x9x40 bushnell scope..not even high good glass, just decent in my opinion for 405 including tax/etc)

Got a free box of federal ammo along with purchase. I bought it from one of our local mom/pop stores, inspite of better prices at Wally's or Sportsmans.

Just wondering if any of you own a model 200 and how has it shot for you.
Thanks.

I have a 25-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 260, 243 (2 of these, was 3 but one is now a .223) all in savage 10,110,11 models. They are identical to the Stevens 200 and all shoot great. I have a 220 swift and 22-250 in model 12's that maintain less than an 1" with most loads and 3 laods a piece hang at about .3.

You will love the Stevens once you get the trigger lightened.

I can't speak for larger calibers.
But mine in .223 can probably shoot better than I can. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Dime-sized 5-shot groups @ 100 yds. from a bench.
{Too bad that I can't shoot that good in hunting situations, lately.} /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Been wondering about that one. Does it really weigh under 7 lbs in the 300 mag.? Thinking about something a little larger for elk and won't use it much so don't want to spend too much. A 300 that light would really stick it to ya though.

Ole, it has great balance in the hands and feels under 8 lbs. Thats not by weighing it just by feel. I'd say it's right around 7. It's dual pillar bedded and to answer MH wash's question, they come in short action or long. IN short and long.

Long includes: 7mm mag/300 in 24" barrels. And 25-06,270,30-06 in 22" barrels.

Short includes: 223, 22-250 rem, 243, 7mm-08 and 308 all in 22" barrels.

Savage quotes the weight with no scope/or ammo as 6.5 lbs. Mine has the scope and sturdy rings and mounts and it's under 8 for sure.

Sureshot, have you got to shoot it yet? how is the recoil? I have been looking at the 300 wm and am not to sure about the recoil with such a light gun.

I have the .223 it shoots great. If I ever get a 22-250 it will be a stevens, or I was thinking about a 7mm mag or .300 mag for a back up big game. I think there great rifles mechanicly, there just ugly. I'm not much to look at either but I get the job done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am going to the range tomorrow. 10/30/06. I'll take my camera and post some pictures once I get her dialed in. For now I've nicknamed it the beast , lets see if she's tamer than I think.

Typo on my part, shoulda read 10/03/06. I went to the range today and lets just say that the weather wasn't in favor of a good range day. 15-20 mph winds and where the range is I was getting almost all of it as a cross wind. Range is setup south, shooting north. Wind was from the west to the east.
First I started out at 25 yards. Was about 12 inches high and 4 inches right. Got her back towards center and and dead on after 4 shots. Next 6 were at 100 yards. Cleaned, started first set and was dead center and 2.5 inches high. First 3 shot group from 100 yards after cleaning measured at 1.25" Now I am shooting federal 180 gr. Spear hot-cor sp bullets. (factory loads on the lower end budget. I was impressed for cross wind and low end factory ammo. Next 3 shot group was 1.38 ".
My shoulder started to feel the recoil of the .300 after the 10th shot and my body made adjustments that I didn't want it too and I began to slap the trigger with some flinch. Not a good combination. I swapped guns and took my 4 year old son back to the 25 yard target and focused on trigger pull and breathing. Then I let him shoot around 25 rounds. Went back and cleaned rifle and shot 10 more shots 8 at 100 yards and 2 at 200 yards. No group was any better than the first and worst was 1.89". My 2 at 200 were 1".
Ok now for my thoughts. This rifle handles very similiarly to the weatherby vanguard in .300 weatherby I had. Both rifles had synthetic stocks, balance well, etc. The recoil pad on the stevens/savage leaves something to be desired and I will be adding on an aftermarket one before the next range out and defintaly before the season starts. The action is smooth and the gun has a good overall feel. The recoil from both guns mentioned above were similiar. I will put better glass on it next year and see if my buddy can work some loads up for me. Overall I was impressed today for all the things i did wrong and the weather the gun still shot great. Can't wait to make some changes and shoot on a nicer day.

sorry no pics..i dropped my digital camera out of my truck onto the concrete and lets say the concrete one.

i have one in 308 it shoots great shooting 150gr ballistic tips for coyotes haven't shot one yet but i can't wait i got mine for around 350

You got me to wondering so i checked my savage 110-7mm rem. with bushnell 6-18x50, with three rounds of speer 115gr, nylon sling and limbsaver pad, it came in at 9 pounds on the bathroom scale. (sorry thats the only scale i have at the moment, it breaks at a 1/2 pound, and yes the limbsaver pad does what they say it will.) blue
