Scent elimination products...

was wondering how many people use any type of scent elimination products and which brand/type. the reason why i ask is i use scent elimination shampoo/body wash, deodorant, detergent and dryer sheets. plus the usual spray down before a stand. i've had terrible luck on calling in coyotes and was wondering if one or a combination of these items is actually having a negative affect. for those of you who don't, do you just use what ever is in the shower and the laundry room to clean yourself and your camo? thanks.

I use Right Guard roll on, Old Spice stick, etc. With regular showers and application of the above "scent eliminators" afterwards, I haven't had a lot of complaints...Oh sorry, you mean for coyote hunting!! With that specifically in mind I use Right Guard, Old Spice, etc.

Joking aside, you will never fool a coyote's nose, no matter what you use.

If you are hunting an area where coyotes are not habituated to human scent (for most of us that's usually the case), be aware of wind and set up accordingly. A decoy can help sometimes as once they "focus" on it they are more likely to "ignore" scent, but be assured that they will retrieve any scent whether they pay attention to it or not.

A canine can smell cocaine dissolved in gasoline. No way is some kind of suit or spray-on stuff gonna stop a coyote from smelling you if he gets downwind. Play the wind and spend that money you'd have spent on scent control on gas to make more stands. That'll do more to improve your success.

I wear scentblocker, rubber boots and spray down with scent eliminator. Walked to my tree stands while deer hunting. Watched coyotes cross my path without being detected. Called one right to my stand on the path I walked in on, not detected. I'm not saying it will always work but if it buys you a little time, I'll take that.

Nope, scent eliminator doesn't work. Thats great you called a coyote on a path you just walked in on but it doesnt typically work that way. Every coyote that crossed your path definitely smelled you, obviously the one coming down your path also did too. It is the reaction of the coyote to your scent that really matters in the end but.... Just like some humans are stupid, so are some coyotes.

There are no scent ELIMINATING products, only SCENT REDUCTION. I wash my hunting clothes with unscented soap and shower with unscented soap before going hunting to help reduce odor, but face it, to a coyote, you stink!

When deer hunting I wear rubber boots that I keep as scent free as possible. During the rut I have had coyotes follow my doe in heat scent trail right to my stand, but that is more of an exception than a rule. Usually they will catch an unnatural odor before they follow your track very far, and usually as soon as they cross your track.

OKAY, i'm not asking if scent elimination products work. that topic has been done. i'm asking... has anyone noticed any negative effects of using them rather than not. i'm asking particularly in detergents for gear and hair/body washes. for example you used a product and every coyote that got near, not necessarily down wind, has bolted. but when you didn't use any the coyotes in a similar situation came in. hope that clears up the question.

The most effective use of scent eliminators is to seperate hunters money from their wallet and transfer it to the scent elimination companies. Beyond that it comes up pretty short everywhere else.

I dont know about its effect but everytime I watch Predator Quest Les Johnson sprays himself with some scent eliminator

Does it help, I dont know.

Can it hurt, I dont see how.

I don't see how it would have negative impact - if a coyote gets downwind and smells you, he'll probably (not always) leave regardless of your clothing, body wash, shampoo, toothpaste, deoderant, perfume, etc.

3807patriot, while it is true Les does use scent eliminators on his shows especially the last year or two you'll note his accomplishments prior to the whole scent eliminator thing. Hummm, food for thought...might just be the hunter.

i dont use any period and have had deer and yotes literally under my stand at the base of the tree not notice a thing. the wind is more important but idk.

scent lok doesnt work and was proven to be useless becasue you cant reactivate the carbon without burning all the cloth.

sprays idk. i stopped wasting my cash on it

Your lack of success is not due to you using scent eliminating products on your gear or yourself.

I thought he sprayed down with it because its one of his sponsors, Evidently he has no adverse side effects by useing it.

I'm sure it is because his sponsors provide it...they pay his bills and keep food on his table, so I have no issue with that. Nope it does not seem to have an adverse effect. Can't say it makes a real difference on his actual success rate either. He's just plain good and could probably call wearing a pink bunny suit, doused in Chanel #5, and still out call, and out kill me, on my best day.

dont even waste your money on scent control! just dont use scented deoderant or aftershave and watch your wind! id personaly save my money and buy a new predator dvd or a hand call before i bought a scent product for coyote hunting!

its alot different hunting deer with scent away than a coyote whom lives off his nose

When elk hunting we always take a burlap sack and when we get to elk camp we take some sage brush and stuff it in the sack with our clothes everynight same if I'm hunting over here in the valley break off some fur tree branches and put them in with our clothes it seems to work we bow hunt and never use stands it's always spot and stalk and call had some cows and a few calves about 10 feet from me. I'm new to the predator hunting thing so I have never tried it with them. I always try to watch the wind though.

There was an episode of Myth Busters where they used multiple scent blocker products and then got into a scent blocking suit and air mask. The blood hound did not skip a beat in tracking him down.I think it is good to reduce the human scent but you will never get rid of all of it.
