Scent Theory

I laugh when guys worry about scent when we go hunting, personally I don't care if my calling buddy doses himself in old spice. when we as humans smell a hamburger the coyote smells the lettuce, the pickeles the mustard etc. you flat out will not fool a yote if they are down wind of you depending on how close and the wind conditions. even if you didn't have any scent on yourself, what about your gun, caller unit, or hair for that matter?? if you have a 10 mph wind, IMO its gonna be tuff for a yote to smell you beyond 300 yards downwind, if you have a very slight wind say 3-4 mph, or less basically you have a scent handgrenade going off, I have seen a yote bust at over 525 yards in conditions like this. bottom line is don't let yotes get downwind without being seen first

When I hear people praise these scent lock suits I just have to shake my head and wonder how in the world can folks believe the hype and fall for the claims. I agree with Guess and do try to keep scent to a minimum but thinking that by wearing some suit you are going to keep your scent contained and prevent deer, coyotes from smelling you, come on. BUT then I stop and think about it you know there are people that voted Hillary Clinton to be a Senator and you know there are people who think OJ didn't do it so its no wonder.

I have had luck fooling a dogs nose by sitting on top of a rock, my scent was carried upward and the sar dog walked right by me, they searched for over 45 minutes when I finally had to make a little noise because I was tired of sitting there. On a similar experience I perched atop a small tree wich was growing out of a large rock, same effect, my scent was carried up and over the the sar dog and the handler ended up walking miles, when they finally returned I could hear the cussing and swearing from afar!! So it is possible to trick a dogs nose using thermals to your advantage.

The belief in the suit probably comes from hunting 40-50 days a deer season on heavily hunted public land and time and again having 3 year and older deer not have a clue your there.

When you get a group of does come in downwind and you start wackin them w/ a bow they have no freaking clue what to do. They cant believe they didnt smell the danger so hear they come back again. Im not talking 1 or 2 deer in a group Im talking 5-15 of all ages.

If carbon didnt adsorb the boys in the space station would be long dead. Same basic technology. Its been around for almost twenty years to the hunter. If it didnt work thier would be no repeat buyers. Im on my 2nd suit and wont hesitate to buy a 3rd.

Put 10 people in a sandbox 3 can break a crowbar,4 will be lucky to make a pyramid and the other 3 will have the best castles youve ever seen.

My hunting partner is a taxadermist. We hunt mostly after work. I shower and wear clean clothes before we head out. He shows up in grimey clothes, reeking of blood and carcases, blood and hair on his shoes, been at the shop all day messing with chemicals etc. I can smell him from ten feet away.

It used to annoy me but I don't care anymore. We hunt the wind and terrain and we have success. We called in 18 CA coyotes last month without any scent cover or scent elimination whatsoever. You just have to work with the wind.

I wonder how the Indians ever survived without this technology? I also wonder how all these bow hunting freeks feel about fair chase while being suited up in the latest and greatest scent blocking gear. It kinda says somthing about who is a true Hunter, an individual that can use his smarts to bag game without having to have the gimmiks out there to boost self conffidence, I for one like to bowhunt (and have been successful), but I dont need to spend my hard earned money on somthing that was created by profiteers. And for the guys on the space shuttel, Is the Carbon there to absorb the stench of illegal aliens /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif? I am not trying to hurt any ones feelers here but I hate to see people make others rich off of somthing they could be successful without.

For the guy that only gets out 3-5 times a month, hes just happy to get out. When you spend and avg. of 250 hours in a stand a year it gets alittle annoying to watch deer run off because the wind decided to switch at the last minute.

To say its not fair chase is an excuse on for you not for me. Im not invisiable. That deer can lay in bed till 9 pm if he wants. He can go the other way, he can hole up on the neighbors property, but if he comes in downwind of me he's gonna die.

I'll also add I use a recurve, I believe that is fair chase enough.

you see what I mean now? there are guys here that will swear by the suit or whatever scent eliminating agent they use.Which is fine if that is what you want to do. I just don't have the money to shell out for all 7 of us to go to that extreme.
I once killed a 5 year old buck that walked directly under my tripod on his way to my downwind side. He chased off a young buck and came right back to me. I killed him at 7 yards downwind of me with a bow.
Now had I been wearing a suit or some great scent removing product I would have thought that I had fooled his nose. The fact is that there were other factors involved.
I worked all day without the chance to get cleaned up before going hunting that day.I certainly wasn't scent free,'m a plumber!
We use the wind and terrain to our advantage, if the wind changes we change with it.

Im not saying the suit is 100% on everything. On deer I would say 98% (which is what I hunt mostly) hogs 50%, and coyotes about 60 maybe alittle better.

I know that will ruffle some feathers and I am certain the yote is by far the cagiest critter in the woods.

Cover scents dont work, scent eliminating technology does.

Guess if you got 5-6 kids your lucky to have anytime to hunt at all lol.

Activated carbon will "clog up" with enough human scent and other molecules to be ineffective before you take it off the rack. Despite what the manufacturers say, you can't recharge it in your dryer, unless yours gets up to 800 degrees plus. I understand how this stuff works and refuse to buy it. I think Glenn's analysis a few posts back is about the best summary of scent control I've read. I've tried in the past to argue the point, but I don't think I was as clear as Glenn was. Take heed, he's on to something.

Guess-- 7 kids I think you maybe should have taken advantage of the cover up ol willy technology! Just kiddin, I have 3 kids and they are the best thing that ever happened to me. I took my boy hunting the other day (who is 5) and he nailed his first wabbit with a .22 the look on his face was worth a million. I also took him coyote huntin and he was scared that the yotes would come in behind us and get us. On the next stand he was hooked even though we didnt get anything.

i wear wool as you can see in my pictures. the old timers didn't need all this scent nonsense. I hang my close outside and hunt the wind. A friend of mine has a chemical carbon suit from an army surplus store. he says it prevents chemicals from infiltration. He says If it prevents chemicals from getting in, the same holds true from scent getting out. I laugh cause i do as well as he does.

Look into the anti-microbial silver max products. These are the only products on the market that I purchase.

guess: excellent post, you produced the definitive on the scent topic IMO. Strong Work!!!

I'm usually wearing a Gore-Tex jacket and pants (always the pants, usually the jacket). With the size of the pores, wouldn't that stop most of the scent from "leaking out" about as well as anything? It's pretty much wind-proof. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Goretex is windproof yes, but also breathable there in lies the problem. The baselayer made of a silvermax antimicrobial is the answer. Try the following experiment. Venture to Cabellas or Bass Pro and purchase a pair of Rocky brand or any other sock made with silver based or "silver max" components. Wear those socks for a straight week then give them a sniff. You will definetly be surprised. "little to no odor" You can also do a search on copper and silver ionization and the use of both elements by settlers out west in barrels containing water to help facilitate fresh water. The copper and silver agitation in the barrels helped with keeping the water drinkable. "Ionization" The same science has been used in swimming pool, hot tub sanitation and now clothing for hiking, hunting etc. Slivers or microscopic pieces of silver are now being used and reasearched for use in operating rooms and general medical settings where an anti microbial environment is desired. I have a term paper and other facts based on the science of silver and the anti-microbial properties. If anyone would like further information on the topic I can post it or send in a personal e-mail.

I like to catfish as well as hunt. Catfish find their food by tracking scent, however If Im fishing where there is current and the catfish is UP current from where the location of my bait soaks,,he aint gonna smell it! He cant. Same with using the wind to you advantage. The catfish BELOW the bait can pick up on the scent being swept down current to them. As far as using A SCENT to your advantage. Why not just cut some pine or cedar chips, limbs or needles up . Then place your hunting clothes along with this in a non scented trash bag a few days prior to you hunting trip. Thats as natural as it gets! A lot cheaper too. Im hunting below an old abandon chicken farm where there is a large pond that the chicken waste used to run in. It usually has a dull unpleasant odor to it. The dam of the pond is a great place to lay down and look over an open field surrounded by woods. I think that a situation such as this or and area near a cow pasteur carries enough other natural odors to help offset my human odor. (Dont shoot the cows!) Just my way of thinking. For the hunters that has the most play money,,I say experiment with all the latest. Hey if it works for you,,its only money! As for myself,,, well,,I will just have to resort what mother nature has to offer and make do with it. Its all good! One last thing,,,The guy that was talking about the old spice cologne,,well just maybe if you set a couple of open bottles of that stuff around your hunting area,,the coyotes may get so use to the scent that they wouldnt pay attention to the spiced up hunter when he came in to hunt!!! Hummmmmmmmm.? How about a couple strips of bacon scattered near you electronic call? Na,,,thats going way to far!

If scent block worked every bag of cocaine in the country would be wrapped in it.A coyotes nose is keener than your eyesight. How do you deal with your breath. Much of human scent is exhalation. If I can't smell my stinky socks, then a coyote can't smell them either??Things don't have to smell to have a scent. Coyotes are cautious of anything new in their environment.. An exaggeration to put this in perspective I use is that you could throw a t bone steak in a coyotes territory and he would probably walk around it a number of times before he it.I have baited coyotes from time to time in the snow years ago and it is exactly what they did, although I did not use a tbone."But to each his own, if you think scent block makes you hunts successful then I suggest you use it.
