Scents to lure?

One rancher told me he would kill a rabbit, rub the blood around and place the rabbit as bait. I also saw a post in another category asking about urine scents to attract coyotes but it had not been responded to.

So, does anyone use in heat scents to attract coyotes? If so, can it be used outside of the mating season? What's the best way to use it?

I have never heard of anyone using scent to lure, only to mask the human odor. Either way I feel it is a waste of time and money. Just my opinion though on the use of scent. It would be interesting to hear if anyone actually tries to lure them with scent. But then you would have to ask yourself, did that Coyote come in because of the scent or because of the howl you blew??? Assuming you were covered in some sort of in-heat scent. Not me, just don't think you can fool a Coyote nose but you can fool those ears.

I have heard of others that use something and I do use a bait sometimes. What I use is a bait lure used for trapping. Put some in small jar that will fit in your pocket. I call crosswind most time, place lure in front in hopes that a coyote will come in on scent trail if he tries to get down wind. Can't say if it really works but feel it to be worth the time and effort to do. This would be a judgement call for each of us to make.

I would not hedge my successes purely on scents, but if you can confuse him momentarily to buy time for a standing shot, why not use it.

a bunch of liver in a gallon jug, put water in it, leave in the sun for a couple weeks. Just set it out with the lid off for bait. I also read that 12 miles of Dead Fish (From Cabella's) works well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Seems to me I read in a Predator Trapper magazine to use sardines for a cover or lure scent.I bought a tin of it at Wal-Mart,but I keep forgetting to take it with me when I go out to hunt. May give it a shot if you remember. It just cost .50
