School me on gun safes.

So I was told by the better half that I needed to give her some ideas for a Christmas present. So I came up with a gun safe, and she actually thought it was a good idea because I've run out of corners in my house to store my guns. I found this one from Tractor Supply and was wondering if anybody else had this model or one like it to let me know how they like it.

Cannon 36 gun safe

Also if anybody could give me some advice with other models that they like or ones I should stay away from.

Canon safes have a good rep. I personally prefer external door hinges that provide a full open door swing. This help with placement choices and passage while open along with better lighting and loading.
Also prefer mechanical dial or backup to electronic pad.
Always get bigger than you need as you may get more guns and always end up with home stuff in there like jewelry cameras and documents.

I have a Cannon from Tractor Supply. Don't have any complaints about it,I looked at a lot of different brands before I bought this one and the Cannon had a lot of features of the higher priced safes. The safe you have a link to is the one that I have.

How many guns do you have in yours? I haven't been able to find one in person, and can't get a good idea of how much space is inside from the pictures they show on the website.

You can store a lot more rifles if you order a rod system from Joe Bob Outfitters.

Cannons are good safes. I purchased a widebody during their(Tractor Supply)Labor Day sale for the price they are asking for the 36 gun safe.
Might want to check at the store about coming up Christmas sales. I had the space so I got the larger one.
They do fill up fast with scopes attatched and AR's with scopes take almost triple the space of what they consider space for one rifle.
Always get the largest you can accomidate and or afford. Extra space will allow easier access to any and all Firearms.

Make sure its fire rated and buy the biggest one you can afford, if you can go big for an extra couple hundred..... Spend it!

Gun safes don't just hold guns. They protect important papers, small family heirlooms, coin collections, pictures that can't be replaced etc... So a bigger than you need safe always gets filled.

Edit,
I just looked at your link. I used to have a little browning safe that was that same size. It says it holds 36 and I'll tell you right now it will hold about 12 scoped rifles without banging together and the rest better be handguns stacked on the shelf.

Yeah, it is; I know I was really impressed first time I watched it. He does an excellent job of explaining many of the finer points of gun safes, in a way that really makes sense.

Hope it helps!

To me, I like a tan interior. I think it is easier to see into than black or dark grey. Also, an electrical plug in the back is a nice feature for a dehumidifier rod.

Definitely want the dehumidifier down here in the south. As far as seeing in it being an issue J C, if you have the plug inside, pick up an LED Strip Light and run lights in it.

You can run with precut strips like the one seen here...

Or, pick up a roll and cut them to desired length...

Both come with adhesive backing, simply peel and stick to a smooth surface. If you don't have a smooth surface to stick the adhesive to, the clips below, with some small screws can be used to screw it to the bottom of the shelves.

You may need some additional wire or plugs to run between shelves should you want to light all of the shelves, but those too are available on Amazon, just make sure you have the right plugs for the strip lights you're using as they come in 2 pin, and 4 pin configuration. Most of those can be found in the "Also Viewed" listings below the main product on the page.

If you don't want colored lights in the cabinet, I used this White Kit in my call cabinet...

http://www.ledshelf.com/led4white.html

It comes complete with 4 strips, Ts, Ls, short extension cords, long extension cords, AC Adaptor, switch the whole 9 yards. Service was excellent, ordered it Sunday night, had it Thursday morning, from 2000 miles away. Have been running it for 2 years now, and haven't had a single LED quit yet. Aside from trying to screw the little itty bitty screws in the brackets upside down, while trying to hold the door on the cabinet up, hold the little itty bitty screw, and the little bitty bracket it screws into, all with short thick fingers, any 10 year old could have hooked it up. It was simply a matter of sticking strips up, and plugging wires in.

While the AC adaptor 'may' generate a little heat, (the one on the white kit I have above isn't even warm to the touch), the LED strip generates none. They run for pennies a month, if inadvertantly left on. Another option would be to wire a motion detector in on the circuit and then they'd turn on automatically when you opened the cabinet and started digging around, and time out and turn off when the door was closed.

On the call cabinet, I simply taped the wire to the bottom of my shelves, in the corners to hide it from view, and to the back of the cabinet to keep all the wires under control and keep it neat, using Gorilla Tape. Been 2 years now, and none of it has turned loose.

Between LED Light Kit and Gorilla Tape, you're talking $40 to effect some awesome lighting in your gun safe. With the option to run white or any of hundreds of colors you can dial in on the remote on the RGB kits for affect.

Might be something to think about!
