1 inch scopes are 25mm. 30 mm are bigger for better light transmission. Diff. mounts for each.

It generally makes no difference in light transmission. The main advantage of the 30mm tubes is a wider range of adjustment in windage and elevation. And wall thickness being equal the bigger diameter will be stronger.

Mostly the difference is cost. The 30 mm scopes usually are more expensive than the one inch (35 mm scopes). Have to say I've never owned one, but shot a friends Leupold and I couldn't tell any difference.

I have one 30 mm scope, and the glass is very good, by design. But, all 30 mm scopes aren't created equal optically. This means that, just because a scope has a 30 mm tube, it has better glass than a 1" tube scope. It's false thinking to believe otherwise.
The only thing 30 mm tubes provide is more adjustment travel, and a stronger tube, all other design aspects being equal.
There are many 30 mm scooes that do have superior glass, by design, like the very good European scopes, and Leupold's new VX-7, which I have. However, the down side of 30 mm scopes is they just do not look as good mounted on a nice sporter as a 1" tube scope. If Leupold would have incorporated that good glass of the VX-7 in a 1" tube scope, I would have bought that instead of the 30 mm scope, any day. I have the 30 mm VX-7, 1.5-6x scope on a Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts and it does not look good at all. But, due to the awesome image emanating from that scope, it will stay there.

with good glass you won't see any difference in optical quality, as has been stated the 30 mm has much more adjustment in the erector tube, if your not gonna dial it for LR shooting (beyond 1000 yds) go 1"

I bought a Millett Tactical Rifle Scope 4X-16X, Illuminated, mil dot redicle scope with side focus this past May. I mounted it on a Remington Model 700, BDL short action that I re barreled with like new Remington .308 Winchester heavy varmint taper barrel in a HS Precision/Remington SPS Police stock.

I am very impressed with the scope. This scope has a 50mm objective lense. It gathers an insane amount of light! The exit pupil must be the size of a dime! This is excellent for those of us that are over 49 and who wear glass for the first time in our lives!

I would say that great, really clear, fully, multi coated, optically corrected lens with a huge exit pupil make more of a differance in image quality than scope tube dimentions. Perhaps an etched glass redicle and strong, positive adjustments make a better scope that worrying about 1 inch or 30mm tubes. However, I a looking for another 30mm tube scope for my new coyote rifle!

Cow Bob.
