lookin at a vx 2 for my future dtech, and cant decide if i should go with the 4x12 or a 6x18.....im just not sure how a 6x will do for me at closer ranges?

I have the 6x18 on mine now and it's too much for up close work. It also isn't very good in low light condidions. Mines a 40mm and I think the next will be a 50. I would go with the lesser of the two, i'm gonna change mine eventually.

I would go with the 4-12. For a calling rig that it all I can see that would be needed. I currently went with all 3-9 on my calling rigs. I never take it off 3.

Orrbull48, I've got the 6-18x40 VX-II Target fine plex. Its not too bad of a scope, but I hunt open country and a mixed bag of creatures. Including varmints, deer and coyotes.

Is this a coyote only rifle? To be used at close range only?

I have one of each, my thoughts step up to a 3.5x10 of back off to a 3x9, I have all these scopes for a calling carry, hunting rifle a 3x9 or 2.5x8 will serve you best

A friend of mine just picked up a 5 X 15 Browning scope from Natchez Shooters Supply for $199.95. They also have 4 X 12 scopes for $189.95. These are made by Bushnell to Elite 3200 specs. They sure are nice scopes for the money. If you're not positive you want a Leupold you might check them out.

I just bought a NIB 4x16x42MM Nikon Monarch off e-Bay for $305 bucks shipped.Hope it will be ok on a close shot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I was also gonna suggest the LRD in the 4-12X. It's a nice simple ballistic reticle that'll get u out there a ways at only 12.4" overall length (4-12X 40mm PA).

I had a VX-II 6-18x40 Target on my first AR and that gun eventually ended up being my primary calling rifle. The big scope was too much for predator calling in my neck of the woods as most of my shots were way under 100 yards. I sold it on here to a fellow member and bought a VX-III 3.5-10x50 and it's on my current AR. I leave it set on 3.5X-4X most of the time. If I need to reach out there a ways on a hung up critter, then 10X is more than enough. It is about as close to the perfect scope for my predator hunting as there could be IMO.

If the rifle is primarily a coyote callin' rig, I'd not put a scope on that won't go below 6X, that is just too much for those close moving targets. If it's primarily a prairie dog plinkin' rig, than a 6x18 would work quite well.

I do like my 4.5 x 14 x 40, BUT when the action gets close and fast, even the 4.5 is almost too much.

the AR is primarily gonna be a coyote gun....sounds like the 4.5 will do best, i like the 3x9 but i like to be able to look out a ways further sometimes. 3x9 is more of a deer scope for me

I have a Leupold VIII, 4.5x14 with AO on my 22-250 and to me I think it is the best all around scope for predator and small varmint hunting.

Summertime on a pdog town with thermals and your not likely to be able to use anything with more power unless your shooting early morning and late evening.
