Scope mag 6x24 vs 8x32 for p-dogs...

Looking for some opinions/experience....

I have a Bushnell 4200 6x24 scope on a 22-250 that I like a lot. I am putting together a new 6BR for prairie dogs and was thinking of getting the Bushnell 4200 8x32.

Is the xtra magnification useful afield or does mirage/heat and such make the xtra power not worth it?

Thanks!

For how you plan to use it, I think I'd opt for the extra magnification. But, the 6x24 would work really well too.

Some of the time you can't use that extra magnification, but often you can, and then it's nice to have.

One thing that just occurred to me though - I know you want to spot impact. That will be just about impossible with that 32x on an unbraked 6BR.

You may already know this tip, but in the event you don't let me pass it along. Get yourself a very good pair of compact binoculars. Use those to glass the area you are looking for targets (prairie dogs) in. When you spot one, look at the area for a landmark, and then point your scope picture at the landmark and move to the target from there. Those bigger scopes have a narrow field of view and this really helps pick up the target.

I use a 6 X 18 and a 6 X 24 and I have to do the spotting with the binocs cause I have poor eyes. Damn, it is tough to get old!

I use a 6.5-24. Sometimes on 24 power I can not see the impact because of recoil. Most of my shots are in the 18-20 range on the scope power. But why not get the most you can get you can always turn it down. You can only go up to the highest power you have.

rooster32, I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32 that is only a couple of months old that I would sell for $400 shipped. The scope is in Burris Signature rings on a Remington VLS in .22-250 so, it is in like new condition. Let me know if you are interested. Later, Dean-o

I have used several scopes on PDs. My 15x Unertl is adequate power for my shooting. My straight 24Xs are almost too much. With a 6-24X variable, I usually end up using about 18X............

Hello Rooster,

I have a Bushnell Elite 4400 in 6x24 (Bausch & Lomb) and am quite taken with it. I find it an excellent product. I'd be leery of anything larger unless you're carrying a pair of binoculars with you. On the longer shots I have problems picking up my target at anything above 6X. The low end can be more of a problem than the upper end. Best wishes.
