Scope mounts for R-15?

Currently I have Weaver mounts holding up a Nikon 3X9-40. The heigth of the scope is 1 1/14" from the top of the rail to the center of the scope. My problem which leads to my question is when I shoulder the gun I really have to dig my cheek into the stock to get a clear sight picture. The higher the magnification the harder I have to dig in. Target aquisition is difficult making a quick shot unlikely. I understand the importance of a good cheek weld but for me this situation isnt working.

I feel more comfortable with a more heads up attitude. I guess from the lack of drop in the stock? I`m brand new to shooting AR style rifles so could be I`m missing something here.?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

So what do you guys use on your AR`s and is my predicament common?

Any help is appreciated.

I use the weaver high rings with the four bands, on my DPMS. Works just fine for my face. I have a RR with their one piece rings. Seems like the cheek spotweld is a little loose for me, but still a good setup.

Just get a spacer and use regular rings. It cost more than just getting tall rings but I think it looks better..... Or get the Larue...

I bought a set of Leupold see through scope rings at the Wal-Mart for 16.00. They get the scope up high enough for me and seem to be very sturdy. Soon as I save up a little more I plan to order the RRA one piece mounts.

I've got these as well. Seem to be doing just fine so far. I figure for less than 20 bucks, that if they work, they work. Time will tell.

BSquare mount, about 50 bucks. Solid one piece design.
Cabelas list them but they are hard to find in stock. I have bought them either on line or at a REAL gun shop.

Gets that scope up just about right for a flat top.
I use them on my AR10 308 and AR15 223.

Thanks everyone for the information. I like the looks of the RRA high rise but I just might have a set of see through mounts laying around. Which eveer it is I feel better knowing there is a fix available.

Again thanks for the responses.

WVMIKE,
I recently purchased an R15 in .223 & from the research I did I decided to spend my hard earned money wisely and went with the LaRue tactical mounts(QD LT-104 SPR)right from the start. I then put a Leupold (1-4, vx-1 shotgun scope: for the wide field of view) in that mount and am quite happy with this package for the woods & relatively short distances that Maine offers.Since this is also my first AR type weapon, I'm not sure what is causing the problem your describing other than you need a taller set of mounts/rings as some of the other guys have suggested.

I am using leupold high quick release rings with a ProMag AR-15 Flat Top Scope Riser 3/4". I am still waiting for my Nikon Monarch 2.5-10X50 to get in ([beeep] backorder). But i did slap another scope on it and it seamed to be in the right spot. The ProMag ($22) has thumb screws for quick release so if i had to do it again i wouldn't have bought the Quick release rings. Also, i feel that the one piece mount will be better at holding zero if you ever pull the scope off.

On a side note, the ProMag has a see thru hole but it is impossible to get your eye down low enough to use.

Any thoughts on this will help. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Thanks again to all for the info and thoughts.

Jimanaz, I just saw that sticky last night and there is a ton of great info there! A hearty thanks to Furhunter for the great work! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
