scope size

I have a 3X9 on one rifle and I usually keep it set at about 6X. Another rifle I have is a straight 20X and it is way too much I think.

my vx 3 4.5-14x40 long range was /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif699.99 no shipping costs or tax from colorado optics. Wish I would also have gotten at least the heavy duplex if not the illuminated. I know its a lot of $$ but what else do you have to spend it on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have used a LOT of scopes. On a limited budget it's hard to beat Bushnell.

I had a Springfield Armory 4X14 that was AWESOME at the range or in the field at LONG distances, but often too much for coyotes, due to limited field of vision.

Had a Bushnell 1.75 X 5 Wideview on my AR. Excellent field of view, very clear. Used it for a 240 yard shot on a Prairie Dog (perfect hit).

Used a 8 X 40 X 56 MilDot on my .308 . WAY TOO MUCH scope (sold it to the local Sheriff's Department for their Sniper Rifle).

DEFINATELY must recommend low power variable zoom for coyotes.

Your question was how much scope power on coyotes. Most folks are way overscoped. I did a survey post, and the average shot on a coyote was 75 yards. Dot scope with 1 power is fine at that range.

Folks like shootin' little groups on paper, thats why the big power scopes. A couple guys shot coyote real far, and they opted for high power scopes.

Set your scopes on 4x, and shoot some coyote sillouettes. You will be amazed how well you hit them in the kill zone WWWAAAYYY out there. Try it.

Put a good power 2x7 on your rifle, and you will kill most everything you call. Another good option is to buy a top of the line 4x scope. You can get some great optics very affordably going the fixed power route.

What cal of rifle are you planing to fit your scope on?
This will help you decide what size of scope. The reason I ask is you may want the flexability to engage not only coyotes but other game that stroll into your target area thus getting more bang for your $$.

sleddog, thanks for the link to the survey i missed that one..i found it interesting.i use a 2x7 usually set at 4-power,i may do some scope switching around & am considering a leupold fixed-4 i would really like a 1.75-6 xvIII.bottom line is most guys are shooting coyotes at fairly close range & high powered "varmint" scopes are not needed.the guys on the prairie may be different.by the way i"m in the 50-75 yard range hunting sage country.to get back to the point of the thread i think a 3x9 would probably work for most people-most of the time...

knock'em down, you are right on,i missed my 1st called coyote @ 50 yards with a 3x9 set @9 power of course????? you can pick up a coyote easier than some think @ somewhat longer distances without having or needing in my opinion a high powered scope...target aquisition is everthing......on the other hand for load testing-bench shooting a powerfull scope would be nice....

3-9x40 or 2-7x32.
Most shots here in the midwest (Missouri and Minnesota) are up close and personal.
