Scope suggestions for Savage 17 HMR?

I'll be getting a Savage in 17 hopefully this week. Any suggestions on a scope? I'm budgeting/assuming approximately $350 for the scope. Plans are to use it on bobcat, fox, and possibly some prairie dogs on an upcoming trip. I would assume a variable of up to 14x maybe more?? My main gun is a 204 but I've always wanted a 17. Thank you for your input!

I actually have high magnification on my .17 ( Burris signature 6-24X40). I shoot small critters with the rifle and have trouble seeing those small targets like crows and tree squirrells.

I appreciate quality optics but your not shooting a 22-250.
I have a Sav.17hmr w/a 4.5x14 Leu and find it plenty for those 100 yd praire dog shots.
I like that little caliber but, theres no way I'd use it for anything but beer cans and praire gophers.

At the budget end, I have a 6-24x42 Varmint Tasco on my .17 and it seems to work just fine at 100 yards - bright, clear, mil dot, AO. Have only done paper work to sight it in and am looking forward to doing some field work with it. It will do until I know what I really want in a higher end scope.

OK, I am old.. and CHEAP..I mounted a Simmons WTC 6.5-20X on my CZ 452 .17HMR Varmint 5 years ago..while not the worlds best scope it is an excellent scope for the money..paid $99 at the time...see them for $109 now. It is a honking BIG objective scope with granite finish and not for everyone but hey, you could buy a lot of .17HMR ammo with the $250 you saved.

I also have two Nikon BuckMaster 6-18X's w/Nikkoplex reticle, on a RR AR Varmint and a CZ Varmint .204..work fine for PD's for me.

You'll like your new Savage .17HMR. I put a Mueller APV 4.5-14X on mine and while I don't shoot it as much as the CZ, it is a good setup...well under your budget.

Best wishes with your selection.

I have a Simmons ProSport 6-18X50 A/O on my Savage 17HMR, I think I payed $75-85 shipped from Natchezss. Fanatastic deal in my opinion.

I've been really happy with it. With the bull barrels make sure you get the right mounts as the thicker barrel makes for a close fit with some of the A/O scopes if you go that route. I did a barrel mod on mine so I could get the scope almost grooved into the barrel.

I'll add another vote for the BSA sweet-17. Not the absolute greatest optics, but for the price it's hard to beat. And the calibrated turret is real close.

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 on my 93BTVSS. Mil-Dot recticle. With the amount the .17 drops at ranges where it is still very accurate seemed like the natural choice. Was within the budget you mention and its been probably my favorite scope.

the simmons WTC is a very good scope for the money. i would say 350 bones budget for a scope is crazy for a .17! thats more than the gun is worth by far. i have a .17 HMR savage with bull barrel and accu-stock/trigger. i have the simmons WTC 3x9 on it and its a dream to shoot. no problem hitting my mark inside 200yards. it has a basic rectile, so after about 150ish i have to start compensating myself, but ive never had a problem. the scope goes for just over $100. cant beat that.
