Scope sunshade - a good thing or just more bulk???

Most the time, no. But nice to have when needed. Also keeps glare/reflection off the front lense when you can't set up with the sun directly behind you.
I mostly hunt areas with little to no shade available.

Every time I set-up pre Dawn, and run into 1st couple hours of morning . Never fails that the glare of the Sunrise low horizon, Really Sucks . and me being me, I Always forget packing a Sunshade .. So I would say ..." yes ". for a Benefit Using .
.

I started shooting with a sun shade 26 years ago… I never shoot without one…. I have really enjoyed the results,, nothing to long..3 inch max…besides sun issues…it protects my lenses .. at least that is what I am thinking as I trip over some dam branch or hidden trip wire… gezzz😂😂🙈As always, your mileage may vary…

I might use one on a bench gun if shooting into the sun. My rifles won't fit in my scabbard with a sun shade so never use them for hunting and have never lost a predator because of it.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm only using one rifle with sunshade at the moment. It's not really any issue except fitting in scabbard or transporting to next stand and that is where i notice the bulk.

I normally set up so that I'm not facing into the sun so is there any benefit to using a sunshade?

Kinda sorta worth it i suppose. I carry a 5" when its sunny, it looks absurd on the scope but does help. Better than not having it and missing a shot, but its just more bulk. Im hit and miss whether i really need it. I think a honeycomb filter is more important if available for your scope.

But if you have the ability to set up with the sun at your back for the vast majority of stands, I would never carry one. Unfortunately south winds are prevalent when i hunt so i usually have the sun out front of me at some point.

On an old coyote special from nikon they had a honeycomb like screw-in filter on the field-view end of the scope, to where you could look at the sun all you wanted and could never see the sun. It was a great add on from nikon.

I thought it might darken the image in low light scenarios, but I tried it on and off several times one evening, and found no difference to my eyeball.
Also, it can help keep snow and light rain off your objective lense when on stand.
