Scope wanted for AR predator hunting/Range gun

Finally have my Rock River Predator Pursuit 20" bead blasted barell/hogue rubber forearm grip AR-15 flat top coming next week. Looking for a scope to top it with.

It will be for Varmint hunting and range work. I'd like a long range type scope with Adj. turrets more for the Range and long distance shots when I have time to dial the turrets. Otherwise I'll be using it for calling and want some type of varmint reticle, dead hold, or mil-dot scope for quick holdover kill shots.

I am considering the Vortex Viper HS LR in 4-16x44, or possibly in a 50mm obj. Any thoughts? I'm not sure I'm crazy about the 1/2 MOA elevation adjustment though. Maybe the std. Viper HS with 1/4 MOA elevation? I like the zero stop on the LR though.

Kinda looking at the HS 4-16x50 FFP XLR and the Viper 4-16x50 FFP PST as well.

Thoughts, opinions, other reccomendations? I'd really like to keep it under the $600 mark if possible.

Looking for a lighter scope (22 oz and under) as I want my rig as light as I can considering I'm going with the PP for the lighter weight and this will be a field carry gun.

No experience with vortex, heard good things about them. 1/2moa clicks would suck. i have a millet 4-16x50 with mill dots. side focus, 1/4 moa turrets and turret locks and love it. Found it on amazon for 300$.

Vortex is a solid brand. I have a pair of binos and love them. On my AR I have a leupy mark ar in a 3x9 that has adjustable turrets for yardage when shooting a 55 grain load. The glass is very clear an I've been impressed with it.

My 20" PP has a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 BDC on it this winter, my kid has a Nikon M-223 3-12x42BDC on his 20" Coyote. Both scopes are good, but I plan on swapping out my scope for either a Leupold Mark AR mil-dot or a Monarch 4-16x mil-dot after this winter, I just perfer the mil-dot scopes.

I had to chime in here with an alternative scope.
First, I have used this scope on my .223 AR platforms (one 20" the other 24" for three years now on Prairie Dogs. I own two scopes as does my hunting partner. We bought the first ones together and then wanted them for other rifles so each got another.

The scope is the Burris Eliminator. There is now and Eliminator that features 1200 yard scoping, mine are 800 yards. Realistic prairie Dog targets get me out to over 500 with my .223 but mostly 400 or less. The scope is a 4-12 power. The newer edition (more money) is a 4-16 and calculated windage. But here is the BIG picture.

The Eliminator has a built in laser rangefinder. It tells you the actual range to your target + or - one yard. THEN, it puts an illuminated dot on the vertical line that becomes your sight in for that range, adjusted to the caliber, bullet weight and bullet drop at that range.

Forget that it has saved me ammo to the tune of 75%. The FUN FACTOR is the greatest I have ever had. Virtually one shot, one hit if you do your job.

Used are rare and hard to find. Since the new edition is out, you can find the first Eliminators for around $700 on E-bay. My first one cost me $675 shipped. The second I had a discount coupon from the factory and paid less than $600.

They are a bit heavy for carrying but all my Prairie dog shooting is from a bench. Coyote from a fixed spot is fine but it is a bit much to walk around with.

Opinions are freely given but, if the guy has not shot this scope, his opinion doesnt matter. It is so deadly on Prairie Dogs, I am surprised it isnt illegal.

Thanks for the responses. I'd like a higher power scope on the high end of 14-16 more for range work and when I'm super steady with my short bipod and rear bag (in field or range).

I am looking for a lighter scope as I'm going with the PP for the weight issue. The Millet looks like a great scope at the price but heavy. The burris looks awesome but expensive and heavy in the 16 power. I'd love to not have to mess with my rangefinder and have it all in one, that must be nice huh?

I'd glanced at the Leupy Mark AR in the higher power as well as the Monarchs but don't care for the Nikon BDC retilce (little circles instead of precision crosshairs).

Keep em coming!

Here is mine with a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5 x 20. It has clear sharp focus all the way out to max power. For $125, you can't beat it.

X2! If you shoot in good light all the time, inexpensive glass isn't too bad. It's low light conditions where better scopes really start to have a big advantage. Go to a good sporting goods store where you can try different scopes and you will see the difference, not only in light gathering, but eye relief as well

The WTC 6.5-20 is in fact a great scope for the money (can't beat em for the $99.00 I paid for each of them years ago)! I have 2, 1 on my .17HMR and one on my basic .243. Both inexpensive guns, but do the job.

I do want better glass, lower magnification on the low end, some ballistic type reticles, and adj. hand turrets that are marked/numbered for precision dialing, especially for this gun that's very sub MOA capable.

That is a great price. Low end is too high though. I already own a Leupy VX3 6.5-20x50 LR with varmint reticle that I won't put on here because I have been burned by high, low end and can't find animal quick enough to get a shot off.

Thanks for all that info and Semper Fi.

Just keep an eye in the classifieds. I just picked up a Nikon Monarch 2-10x for $265 shipped. There are some great deals out there.

There are a couple 4.5-14x Nikon BuckMasters on 24hourCampfire for nice prices. They have "hunters knobs" that are low profile, finger adjustable, and reset to zero. They're certainly worth a look for the $$, IMHO.

With that being said, the options you posted are certainly nice. Buy them from JoeBobOutfitters. He's a site sponsor, so he helps keep up going. Also, with the price point your looking at, there is some free swag offered...just don't forget to add it to the cart.

Here's a decent deal on a Burris Tac 4.5-14...

Thanks for the info and links to those classified ads panther! That's the first time I've been to 24-hour campfire, there are a ton of classified ads there. I'll keep an eye out in the used sections, I definitely like a deal myself. A couple of fhose are close to what I'm after.

I'll Check out JoeBobs as well right now. My gun will be here tomorrow, Guess I'll throw my VX3 6.5-20 LR on in the meantime just to get some trigger time.
