Seasons over!!

So I started this season with nothing that got me wanting to pursue so it was get CJ a buck. Did that and during that time the wife wanted to go so we got her one as well. My younger son Zac doesn’t get to hunt as much due to work, but still manages a decent buck every year.

A little back story first. Zachary was our youngest before CJ came along and grew up going with me but never cared about deer hunting, just loved wing shooting. In fact, he was 15 before he ever pulled the trigger on a deer. I’ve never encouraged or discouraged my boys from hunting, just told them it’s something Daddy likes to do and they’re welcome to go any time. Like I said Zac loved to go, just never cared to kill a deer.

About 4 years ago he wanted to start going so his brother would let him hunt his Tower stand. All that I’ve ever asked was to try and shoot an older age deer. His first year he got really excited and shot what was his biggest ever. The next year was an OLD buck that didn’t have a “trophy” rack, but had the trophy age and body. Last year he shot another 5.5yr old and this one hit the 140’s. He was tickled!

This year he joked and said it’s a 150” or nothing, lol. I told him I didn’t care about score, just age. He’s already shot a few does and when the rut hit I told him let’s just concentrate on a buck. Like I said, CJ and the wife got theirs, so now I was just hunting for Zachary a buck. We sat in the same Tower Stand the others killed theirs out of and had a few encounters with some nice deer, but none that scratched that itch.

Yesterday morning was as crazy as it’s been. We watched 12 yes TWELVE bucks in a line chasing a doe! None were shooters.

We’d split up yesterday evening cause I wanted to put up a climber and see where some of these bucks were disappearing to, so I hunted the climber and Zachary was in the Tower Stand. Nothing was happening so we were hoping for a good morning.

It started off slow for both of us. It’s like the deer decided to sleep in. About 0830 he started seeing chasing again. My spot was slow with only rattling in 2 younger bucks. I decided to get down about 10ish because I had some limbs to break since both those bucks took the same trail.

I was almost to the truck when I finally got to hear what a suppressed shot sounded like from a distance. It was then I got my phone out to ask if he shot (yeah I had to be him) and saw the text messages.
6 bucks chains a doe NW to SE…

Big Buck

I shot!

I text and got details and drove close to the stand. He was literally a blubbering idiot, lol. We went to the place of the shot and again I got bogus details. How do I know they were bogus because we found no blood down the road it was then it was then he remembered it cut East then went South. I finally just asked where EXACTLY was the last place you saw it, as in what bush or tree. He pointed me in the right direction and I told him to go back to the original spot and look for blood again since his memory was coming back.

I decided to start a little grid pattern while looking for blood. Walked down one cut and nothing. Made a right at the end of that cut and all I saw were antlers sticking up. I saw the kickers and knew immediately which deer it was and it was a good one. Needless to say when I got Zac’s attention and he got to the deer he broke down. This is definitely his biggest deer yet!!
