I've been thinning the grey squirrel population around my place, and also loading up on my supply of coyote bait lately.

there's one spot I've always found good, but this year, I'll go and find 3 squirrels there, manage to shoot 2 of them, go back the next day and there are still 3 squirrels there. Today when I went there were 5 of them (well 2 now)

I now have a couple dozen and the coyote buffet table is starting to get full.
soon as deer season ends, I'll start putting out the buffet, and start ringing the dinner bell.

Woods are loaded with greys in my area. To be honest, I don't know anyone that shoots them anymore. I could see at least five squirrels scampering around each of my tree stands this past archery season.

Bushy tails are on the decline in my area. Disease outbreak I think it is tularmaria.Population in some areas down by 90 percent.

Enjoy the greys because they might not always be there.

We are way down from normal in my neck of the Ozarks. Last year there was very little mast, plus a huge windstorm/tornado literally stripped the few trees that did carry mast of their blooms. Foresters told me of seeing hundreds of squirrels swimming the river moving on looking for food. I've heard of mass migrations like that before when the food supply was extremely short. So, this year has been a bust for squirrel populations. However, the mast crop this year was huge and during deer season I saw quite a few late born young squirrels. Given a decent winter and some mast next year the population should cycle way up for a few years.

I've got a lot of old mature oak trees in the area, and they are all dropping lots of acorns, so that probably helps me.

Ive seen more this year than past couple years. Just last weekend while setting in my deer stand I counted 15 greys at one time and 3 reds all within 50 yards of my stand. May have to sight the .17hmr back in a go whack a few. They raised our limit from 6 squirrels to 10 this year so they must think we got a few.
