I'm ordering a new T/C Contender carbine 1 - 12" twist rate 223 Rem barrel from T/C's Custom Shop this week.

I'm trying to decide if it should be a 18" bull or 22" tapered barrel I have fore ends for both already so that isn't a factor in deciding.

This gun will be used as a light weight walk about hunting rifle for predators/varmints and plinking.

Any thoughts or experiences would be awesome.

Mine has shot several different loads pretty well, but my go to load is Benchmark and a 55gr SP or V-max. One problem I had was vertical stringing with some loads.

I had a 22" barrel. It kicked more then you could believe. I lost sight picture of the target on every shot.

Mine was a finicky to load for, and I think that muzzle climb was a big factor(bullet still in the barrel during recoil).

You may want to consider having the custom shop put a muzzle break on it.

I finally down loaded the 40's to 3300 fps to get the accuracy I wanted.

Get an over size hinge pin from Mike Bellum, it will really help with vertical stringing.

I may have found a used s/s 21" 223 carbine barrel for a very good price I'm just waiting for the seller to contact me with where to send the MO.

It has a 1 - 12" twist rate so my plan is to try out my 50gr Sierra Blitz Spitzers with 24grs H322 powder which is one of my favorite 223 loads.

I have also played a lot with reduced Blue Dot loads that would bring the noise level down.

For a scope I am going to install a 3X-9X Burris Short Mag ballistic plex reticle on a MGM s/s scope base.
