Sheep killers

Over my hunt years. I've came in contact with various farmers who had sheep killers.

One farmer once wet met. He told me many years prior. The area farmers hired an ADC man, due to sheep killing. Who over 1 year span. trapped/killed the suspected pair of killers & their litter.

When I came in contact with this farmer. He told me. He had a 4' high fenced in small pasture adjacent to his barn. Coyote(s) breeched that fence & went on a killing spree. Eating very little. I told him, more than likely a territorial pair. Teaching their young to kill sheep. Not to say it may have been only 1 coyote on a spree kill.

Anyway, I told him I will do what I can for him. I waited for Winter snow so I could lay eyes on them. Took me all Winter before I did. They were bedded down far off on the rolling hills. Snow was hard pack with a thick layer of ice. I crept in & went prone on the last hill top that separated us.

The larger of the two was 400+ yards away. I believe that was the male & he was a big one. His mate lay maybe 20 yards or so down the hill side. I shot at the male & apparently hit right under him. As he jumped up straight into the air.

The shot echo'd over the female as she loped quartering towards me as she looked back. 2nd shot I hit her in the throat & she dropped.

The rest of that Winter I never laid eyes on him. But he never left that 1x2 mile land section, either. No other coyote entered his territory. Farmers sheep killing came to a halt.

2years later that farmer told me. His neighbor 2 miles down the road. Started having his sheep killed. I told him that male more than likely moved on & mated with another female. And got her into killing sheep.

Well, after I killed the female. The sheep killing quit. The male had left the area about 2 wks? later. NO coyotes treveled into or across this section the rest of the Winter. When in fact, there were other neighboring coyotes in adjacent sections. This 2x2 mile section BTW, was prime habitat. With plenty of other prey & cover. I "concluded", with the information I had seen. That I indeed killed the female sheep killer.

The following yr, sheep killing started up on the next section adjacent to the 2x2 mile. I "suspected" that male moved nearby & mated with a female. Thus started killing sheep in that section. No doubt some FACTS, were missing in my assumption. My above assumption was biased, still is. Same as my lower scenario. As I wasn't able to obtain ALL FACTS.

I'm sure others disagree. However, I believe the female is the true alpha of the pair. Where she goes, the male follows. She is also the primary teacher of her young. In her absence the male takes over.
