Shilen or Krieger

I had a Kreiger SS 1/10 twist barrel 30-06 and it was better than 1/2" group rifle. I decide to change twist so that 30-06 I put a Bartlein 5r 1/11 twist then for back up put Lilja 1/11 twist also chamber for the 30-06 using same reamer I got those rifles in 2008. My third 30-06 with Shilen barrel wasn't finished till early this year and I used it on late cow hunt Ratchet twist (1/13) for that 30-06. My 280AI has a Kreiger it's on Mel Forbes model 24 action the 270WSM has a Lawton barrel,243AI Hart barrel. I have two 6remAI one has Shilen barrel as does my 22-250AI plus 257Wby used a Chanlynn on 7x57/221FB, Broughton 5c on 300WSM.


Shilen SS select match runs #329 plus shipping,Kreiger SS run $280 plus shipping and price on 5r extra $30,Bartlein SS $295,Hart $315. Rocks 5r barrel $295.

As most see base price are pretty close the extra's add up.

Some barrel just tune alittle better is what I'm finding my 280AI shoots about everything I feed it the Shilen barrel took alittle longer to find the right load vs the other two 30-06.

I spread my barrels out and I've had acouple bad barrel normally gunsmith call and barrel goes back. Sometimes they may get bad steel.

The more I shoot the cut and 5r/5c barrels the more I like them and that's the reason I take that type rifling over a
Shilen.
 
Roper, I also believe 5r/5c is the way to go. i did order one bad barrel from Broughton though. It never even made it out their door though, Tim called me and told me it didn't pass their specs when they finished it so they cut it down and started another for me right away. Its actions like that that will keep me buying his barrels
 
since this is going on a gun that was given to me by my grandfather before he passed, I want to make it one that will last forever. I shoot quite a bit so I want something that will stand up to a lot of target shooting and prairie dog fields. I am looking at 6mmbr or 22br. I will start a new post to see what peoples opinions are on those to calibers.

After +20 Shilens, 6 Harts, 8 Liljas, 4 A&Bs, 3 Douglas, 1 HS Presision and only 4 Kreigers, I guess I better give them a try again? If nothing else, shouldnt be hard to sell it on this site...LMAO!!
 
Both barrels are good and I have both. My gunsmith used to barrel a lot of Shilen, but then switched to Krieger. He told me that Krieger is the straightest barrel he has ever worked with. Given a choice, I would go with Kreiger, but wouldn't feel hurt with a Shilen either.
 
In the centerfire Benchrest circuit, the majority of competitors are shooting Kreiger barrels today.
I don't own one, however that is my choice as I like Hart barrels for stainless steel rifle builds.
I also have two rifles with Shilen barrels, and all of my rifles with either Hart, Shilen, or Douglas barrels are very accurate.
I think the gunsmith doing the barrel fitting is equally important for how the rifle shoots.
There are a WHOLE lot of outstanding barrel makers today.
I'm partial to Hart barrels as it was one of their barrels I bought first in 1968, so I continue using them. They shoot to my satisfaction, and that's all that's important to me. And, they've treated me right ever since my first barrel purchase from them.
Hart only makes Stainless Steel barrels, so for rifles I want blued, I buy Douglas barrels. Bought my first one of them in 1960, it shot well, so I keep buying their barrels. GR Douglas was THE first company to offer aftermarket, high quailty barrels for us to use for custom riflew builds, and I think that's reason enough for me to keep buying their fine barrels.
