Shipping a built AR lower receiver?

I may have a built AR receiver (from a factory built DPMS rifle) coming up for sale and have a few questions as to how to ship it. I know it IS considered a firearm. A rifle was it's original configuration. I also know that I'll need to ship this directly to the buyer's FFL holder.

I called a couple local dealers (Minnesota) and got two different answers on how to ship it. One guy said it MUST be shipped FFL to FFL. The other was sure I could ship this directly to a FFL holder without his intervention.

I've been told UPS, Fedex and DHL will ship firearms. And the USPS as well. But there seems to be some confusion as to if the firearm HAS to be a handgun or long arm... And I may need a copy of the receiving FFL holders license...

I want to offer this at a decent price and not have to pass on the extra FFL cost if not absolutely necessary. But to be quite honest, I need as much as I can possibly get for this as the funds are going towards a new upper.

How would you ship this lil' gem?

From what I know it has to go FFL to FFL every firearm I have bought or sold via internet has had to ship that way USPS will not ship a handgun but I have sent handguns less cylander and grips via USPS. But since your talking about an AR lower, that is a long gun. I would get an FFL holder to ship for you to the buyers FFl holder and avoid any possible repercussions of a legal nature. Or better yet5 if you can arrange a sale face to face if your state allows such things.

All depends on the dealer you're sending the item to. Some allow non FFL to FFL transfers. Most require them to be sent from an FFL.

If you have it licensed as a rifle it can go standard UPS, DHL or Fedex. I wouldn't ship it USPS. Pistols have to go overnight.

Under federal law, a non-FFL can legally ship to an FFL. The receiving party MUST be an FFL. Some receiving dealers won't accept a non-FFL shipment, but that's their decision not the law. I also understand some local jurisdictions have stricter requirements. If they do, I don't sell there.

I sell a lot of handguns on the internet and always make it clear to the buyer that I am not an FFL, and won't ship through an FFL, therefore he/she has to communicate that with their receiving dealer. You must have a copy of the receiver's FFL in you hand (fax copy is now OK) BEFORE you can legally ship. I always use UPS as they are the only game in town for handguns.
