Shooters damage windmills

"Most of the shooters are quite responsible and behave themselves but there are a few that create a real problem......

It looks like that windmill has been shot at and hit for over 50 years.
I wonder why they chose to replace it now?
Rusted up gears finally fail?....Blame it on all the bullet holes on the wind blades??

I agree that it makes shooters look bad when not using targets and not packing out empty shells.

The only time I have seen someone shoot one was the landowner shooting his own windmill at about 500 yards....just to hear the "twing" with a 22 mag.
 
I've seen at least that bad, & probably worse, here lately...

Even made the comment that whan we are not allowed on any public land with a firearm, we can thank the few people that have behaved like this.

It puts us ALL in a bad light.

I don't care if it's windmills, road signs, or shooting bottles just to see them break, I was raised better than that, & would have promptly been beaten within an inch of my life, & had all gun & hunting privledges taken away for a LONG time, had I done something like that.

I guess that respect of someone else's property has to be taught right alongside firearm safety.
 
there's not a windmill in Texas that doesn't have bullet holes in it. I don't know who's doin the shootin' but someone is.
 
Boy I probably should not say I am disgusted!!! But again it is ridiculous what some people do. They will eventually use this to shut down the area to hunting and we can all go see the Pdogs and birds instead. Hope they catch em and stick them with some fines.
 
Actually the area where the windmills were shot has far bigger 'shooter problems' than windmills. The shot up trash, broken glass, cans, tv sets, computer monitors make a lasting impression that will be around alot longer than some shot up old windmills.
 
We used to have a couple places around here that you could go out and set up your own targets and shoot. Thay are now gone because of the same abuse. I think I have seen just about everything you could imagine shot up out in the desert close to town. I now belong to a private range to do all of my shooting. It stays clean and orderly and I dont have to worry about flat tires from busted glass.
 
Not a great picture of the windmill, but from what I can see there is nothing recent there! Probally wanted to make an insurance claim on something that failed long ago!!
 
I'm not sure what insurance the Forest Service carries, since it was them that had to replace the windmill....

The point is, WE have to pay for the vandalism that was done by irresponsible shooters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I don't think a few holes in the tail or blades affect the operation, but a highpowered round through the gearbox will shut 'er down.

If shooters get enough of these incidents catching the attention of Forest Service, BLM or state land, it will assuredly shut down shooting on public land, except perhaps in designated areas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If the property destroyed is on private land, I can assure you it will be shut down as soon as the rancher can buy a lock & chain. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The type vandalism & littering that these people do, give all gun owners, shooters & hunters a black eye. They ought to be more responsible as well with the flightpath the bullet takes to shoot a windmill at an angle fired from the ground....How far is the bullet going to travel, & what will it impact over the ridge? Kids on a swingset?

I'm glad there are those of you here that don't see this type of behavior irresponsible or negligent, & place the problem into the owners' lap.....Perhaps YOU will be the first one locked out.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
I think it is our responsibility to confront and/or turn slobs in. I have seen areas shut down because of slobs. In fact, all of Angeles National Forest is closed to any form of target shooting. I carry a box of garbage bags in my truck. I've handed out many bags and "encouraged" slobs to pick up trash. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I've built a couple of informal shooting ranges up here on State Land. I've kept them cleaned up, picked up all the garbage with the help of a couple of other shooters, provided all the stands (50 to 600 yards in 50 yard increments, the same with meters). We've cleared all the brush, kept the grass mowed about 20 feet wide, ALL the way out to the 600 yard line, and STILL we have to police folks about milk jugs, empty glass containers, paper targets, pallets, etc. etc.

Was finished shooting one day, driving off and come upon a guy with his girl-friend setting up about 300 beer bottles.
I pull up, roll down the window and ask nicley "you gonna pick up all that glass when your done?", he says "sure", I said ok, then as I drove down the road, I dial the Sheriff and file a report, including his plate number.
The Sheriff drove imediatly there, and reported that he must have picked up his bottles and left. Good.

He was planning on having some fun, but didn't consider the impact of his consequences. Some game animal would have run through all that glass and been cripled for life, a very short life.

Heres something else to think about, this site is big enough that several on here have done these exact things. We're not immune to it here.
Not trying to start trouble, but if you are one of those, Stop it, you are ruining it for everyone else.

I'm tired of picking up garbage from other slobs. Dump fee's are NOT that high and good targets are Not that hard to make. A couple of 2X2's with some cardboard backing, staple your targets to that, shoot, then clean up when your done. If you don't somebody else will have too.
