Shooting bags

I got some new bags, only thing is they aren't filled. I'm looking to see what people have used to fill their rests with. I've heard sand, rice and walnut media so far. I don't really want to spend 50 bucks on media if there is a better alternative out there. Let me know what has worked for you.

Go to Lowes/Ace/Home Depot and buy a $3 bag of play sand. I made a funnel out of a red dixie cup to fill em.

I dont think rice or walnut would be heavy enough for me.

Sand is OK, but I've gone to tiny plastic beads used for filling stuffed animals from the craft store. Sand is so needlessly heavy especially when it's humid.

if you know anyone who paints line on roads see if they can get you the reflective beads they put into the line paint. it is excellent media for shooting bags. it has the weight and it conforms to the rifles forend like a glove.

Airsoft pellets, yes they are good for something,

. Won't absorb moisture or clump on you and lightweight. They might cost a little more than going the sand route, but they should last forever as long as you don't spring a leak

.

I use kitty litter and old jeans, seems to work ok. Oh one thing use fresh kitty litter or your eyes will water when you try to shoot.

I'm with Corey. I filled the last Protektor bag I bought airsoft pellets and they work really well if you carry a bag in a pack or do the Walking Varminter thing. You may be a ble to find craft store beads for less but it sure makes a handier bag than my first Protektor filled with Sinclair's heavy sand.

I used walnut media in mine, but I also got a 50lb sack for $14 years back.
I had sand, to heavy, media conforms as well & is not as heavy.
You can hit up the local welding suppluiers in town as I think they carry walnut blasting media for not a lot of $$$.

I filled mine with Bead Blasting media (Silica Sand) and it works pretty well... One of the guys that is really into high end benchrest shooting came up with a putty like substance that he mixes with the Silica Sand in his to create a really firm, but flexible fill...

The bag is on the heavy side, but once in place, it doesn't move easily and still allows the rifle to slide during recoil...That makes getting it back into the same position much easier and more consistent...

The bags made out of the jeans is a great idea, but next time try filling them only 3/4 full they will conform to the stock much better and give a solid hold. With the bags filled this way you can set up the rifle so that the crosshairs are just above the bull eye, then when you are ready to shoot you just squeeze the back bag and it will bring you up to a solid hold on the target. Try it you will find it very easy to shoot a tight group with this method.

New Cat litter media would work. Or beach sand.

I have some bags with sand, some with rice, some with oats and some with lead. They all have advantages and a place when sighting in a rifle.
