shooting bench

Does anyone have a good plan for a portable or permanent shooting bench. Preferable portable but I would like it to be pretty solid. I have looked at a couple and have some good ideas on how to build one but I was going to see if anyone had some good plans. Sounds like 3 legs is the way to go so it's stable on uneven groud. This table will be used to benchrest shoot and also setup to maybe shoot prarie dogs. So all you craftsman chime in here and see what we can come up with.

I found an old folding table with the metal fold up legs and cut it in half then cut out a small c shaped section on the left side of the table.
I reattached the legs from the cut off piece and the table works great for me.

I've got a couple bench plans that I stole from somewhere on the net. They may not be as portable as u'd like but if nothing else, it would give you some good dimensions to work off of. If you shoot me an email/pm gm_440(at)hotmail.com I'll forward them to you if your interested.

How much are you planning on spending? I know, as little as possible, but what are you planning on?

I use the exact same set up when I'm out popping PD, some days they are spookier than the other, I just drape a camo knitting over the table, sit on a 5Gal bucket I have for dove huntng.

I made a table out of 1" plywood. Its not easy to find but worth the effort. The shape is pretty standard in comparison to plans found on the internet. I found brackets on ebay from a guy in Mandan, ND that permit screwing 1" pipe to the table as legs. I carry it brackets up in the back of my truck, slide it out, screw in the legs and tip it over. I'm ready to shoot. It is rock solid and cost me less than $100.

I bought the same brackets Claimbuster referred to. They make a nice solid portable bench. Go to eBay and do a search for Benchrest Brackets. The seller is 280kong. The brackets are welded to the correct angle so you do not have to use wood shims. I used the top design that Wrongtarget posted.
I made a portable bench with fold up table legs and it was nice but the fourth leg always had to be adjusted for uneven ground to get the wobble out. The three-legger top may not be completely flat on eneven ground but it doesnt wobble. You can always thread the leg bottoms and put coupling on them to adjust it for a perfect setting.
The guy from eBay also has some nice Silhouette targets.

Fastest , cheapest is to go to WALLY WORLD , Sam's Club or Costco and buy a $30.00 Plastic , folding table about three feet long . If you want to build one for about the same cost go here: www.boogerbench.com . I'd personally use the pastic one , but my computer is sitting on it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
All joking aside, before the little plastic (and metal) little folding tables came out I built one of the boogerbenches and I love it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Yoy can make 1" plywood with two pieces of 1/2" plywood and contact cement. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

i use an old school desk the newer ones i just extended it and i took some old hinges from and old folding table so the legs would hinge it works awesome and its not heavy

It was just something I "threw together" one afternoon in the shop from left-over wood. I save nice pieces of wood because one never knows what it can be in the future. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

My table is like MikeGranger's, I found the plans on the internet and modified them to my liking. It has two layers of 3/4" particle board topped with a layer of 3/4" Birch Veneer plywood with all three layers laminated together with Gorrila glue. I then attatched 1X3 poplar sticks to the sides which are very nice for lifting, it ads just about a 1/2" lip to the bottom of the table. Legs are 1" black iron pipes, but if I were to do it again I'd use at least 1 1/2" or 2" pipes just to add that extra stability. I also countersunk the bolts into the face of the table and filled it in to make a smooth top. My table is very stable and very portable with removable legs and the table weighing about 50-75lbs.
