Shooting bolt actions from a tripod

I used to have a pig saddle/reaper grip that I see can be used on a tripod but I'm curious what other ways guys use to attach their bolt action rifles to their tripod.
What do you guys do?

I mounted an ARCA SWISS plate just ahead of the magazine on my Ruger Predator. I filled two channels in the forearm with epoxy after I got the lock nuts on the bolts, so that they couldn't work loose. It hasn't given me any problems other than I needed to resight the rifle. I guess the epoxy changed something about the forearm. Once I sighted it in, it has never been a problem since.

I check to see if one of the bolts that secures the receiver/barrel/action is in a good place. I will then run the bolt through the arca swiss plate and secure the plate with one of the bolts.

Yes, the plastic Ruger stock has channels in it in a diamond pattern. I situated the ARCA so it would put a bolt and lock nut in two different diamonds and then after tightening the bolts I filled those two diamonds with JB weld, but not enough to interfere with the free float. Since the nuts are held securely inside each diamond by the JB Weld, I can tighten the bolts without having to remove the barrel and action from the stock. A better option, certainly a better looking one would be to go with an aluminum chassis which would allow more options with something like an M-Lok rail on the chassis.

It doesn't look as nice as perhaps some would like with the ARCA plate attached to the forearm of my Ruger, but it functions fine and helps me kill coyotes while being a light weight and cheap fix.

first two pics are how i did my Remington after finding the perfect balance point when i first got my Rekon tripod and wanted my gun mounted directly......i took it off shortly thereafter as i do not like my firearm locked to the tripod personally..it has nothing to do with your question but i ended up making my own rest for my Rekon that works perfectly for me and how i do it....Good Luck!!!

I like your rest Reid. I had issues with the ARCA plate causing different POI than if just resting on something. Since I use the rifle for multiple things, I wanted it to shoot the same. I think I will make me and the wife a rest like yours Reid.

Thx for explaining DU. Hey Reid, does the current rest with the pipe insulation just cradle the rifle forearm? Is the picatinny rail on the bottom from the old mount that utilized the Arca plate?

yes my rest just cradles the gun as i stated i dont want my gun locked to the tripod....i removed the picatinny rail from my gun as its not needed for my set up any longer...i only showed how i did my picatinny cause that was your original question then i just added my rest to part of the answer

...either way i tapped a threaded hole in my aluminum cradle and mounted the gear that came with the Rekon directly to my rest and now that can be mounted to the tripod itself.....Good Luck!
