Shooting Sticks

Is it worth it to build shooting sticks from tent rods bought at wall mart or just get some underwood shooting sticks of ebay. I do build a lot of stuff but can get them of ebay for 21.00 (sitting kind)

It depends on what your time is worth to you. I made my own so I could have them the height and the sections the length I wanted. I had actually found some discarded tent poles so I didn't need to buy anything.

Hi, I use the fiberglass electric fenceposts $1.25 each. I think they are quieter and still added rubber tube so they don't bang together. We made several sets at once, final cost $6.50. Can't count labor. The thread below shows many different approaches.

coues7-- You can probably build them for a lot less money than you can buy them for if you don't count any cost for the time you spend making them. Kind of like the feeling of making some of this stuff for myself.

I used the 4' long fiberglass electric fence posts just like tripod3 mentioned and then use some Krylon khaki camo paint on them. I use the 3/8" GoodYear fuel line for the rest and also paint that with the khaki camo paint. I have used two different items for the hinge position. The first three sets of sticks I built used castration bands for the hinge. For the last set of sticks I built I used a small bolt with a rubber faucet washer between the sticks for a spacer.

Here's a set that I used castration bands on for the hinge. The rubber fuel hose also does part of the hinge action (the black hose hadn't been camoed yet).

Here's a closeup of the hinge area on the set where I used a small bolt for the hinge. On this set the rubber hose does not help with the hinging action.

Hi, Silverfox thanks you are where I got started. I put a little more spacer between the sticks about 3/16" with #6x1 1/4" stainless bolt and locknut letting the sticks fold with less tension. Then put 5/8" black plastic chair caps over the top of the 3/8" fuel hose. then rubber tubing and a snap closure toward the bottom to prevent banging. Finally I put a threaded coupler in the center so I could break them down for the backpack. Have a new version in the works now.

Look on Uncle Al's Varmint Page, I don't know the address but he has some plans for building a set of shooting sticks that are very light and are as stable as a rock, they are made out of 3/4 inch square oak sticks and are any length you want.

Hi There, I built my own also. All I did was get 2 Dowel rods about 4 feet long each. I wrapped them in cloth electrical tape to protect them and grive them some "Grip". I then wraped a black rubber band around them tightly. This way I can adjust the rubber band up or down as needed AND also spread the legs out to adjust the height. This works Very Well and total cost was about $4

Unfortunately, shooting sticks are one of those items that are inadvertantly left at the last stand. That's what happened to mine. They were the high dollar folding up tent pole type. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

This past weekend made a pair out of fiberglass electric fence poles like a couple have already mentioned. They worked great. I got real cheap, used castoration bands and electric tape for the ends. I actually liked them better than the foldup kind as they double as walking sticks. Now if I leave these behind, no sweat, will just make up another pair for two bucks!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

hello i made mine per the instruction
varmint al provided on his web site.
www.varmintal.com i didnt use the fur on the ends like he does. i wrapped mine in a layer of camo tape,
the wrapped three layers on the shootng end of the sticks. works good
for me !!

Mike, I have left two pair of shooting sticks behind this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Fortunatly they were home made with wooden dowels, castration bands and rubber tubing(not to expensive). I'm getting pretty good at making them.

I once left a $40 dollar Stoney Point Monopod in the middle of a cut corn filed. I painted this monopod brown and tan camo. When I realized I left it, I returned to look for it. After about an hour of looking and backtracking my own tracks, I realized the return trip was in vain. Man, I really camoed that thing well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I ordered another one though. I really like Stoney Point products.

Hey guys have you noticed the shooting sticks Ed Wimberly uses on the Johnny Stewart Operation Predator tapes, i noticed on the O.P 2 tape that came out not long ago that everyone was using the same sticks Ed uses, they look homemade they totally encircle the rifle with some sort of rubber...anyone know how he made them or maybe where he got them?

Silverfox-
I made a set of shooting sticks using the fiberglass electric fence posts. I cut them down a little to make them a little more rigid. They came out nice!! I got the camo paint at wally world and and the posts at tractor supply.
I even tried my hand at painting a camo pattern on them. I call it the "Real Bad" pattern!

i too use a set that i made like Varmit Al's page. they work great. and when i started using a tent blind during deer season i made a new set with longer dimentions to reach the shooting windows. my son and daughter have each made a custom set for themselves as a project with dad.

SHAMELESS

Hi, moatsarchery I have seen sticks like you are describing on video too. I believe they are very similar to the 3/8 electric fence post with the 3/8 fuel line looped over the tops. They may have a rubber grommet pivot instead of the bolt.

I just spent $13 on a Allen monopod from MCSports. I like it a lot better than the sticks I made. It telescopes from about 20" to about 60". I like it better than sticks because I can pick it up and move it a lot easier.

Hey guys i e-mailed H.S about the shooting sticks Ed Wimberly uses on the Johnny Stewart Operation Predator video, they say they are homemade and he uses bicycle inner tube to top the sticks off...Richi
