Shooting Sticks

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding shooting sticks? I've seen the home made variety that Varmint Al has on his web page. Just curious if anyone has had any positive experience with others /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I really like the stoney point sticks cause they collapse down to about 10 inches. Makes it alot easier carrying gun, foxpro, and coyote out of the woods.

+1 Thats what I use and like. They also come with a canvas pouch to carry them in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I made my own from Varmint Al's page, and the are very sturdy. I shot this crow with them yesterday, they worked great!

Here is a bad pic of the set I use.

There is a piece of cordora nylon about 13" or so by 2.5" and the ends are folded over and sewn into little pockets for the sticks, then glued into place. Then there is some heavy rubber bands that can be moved up or down to adj the height of the sticks. (changes the pivot point, allowing you to spread them apart more to lower the resting point)
Hope this makes sense /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

BTW, if you camo them be careful not to leave them and walk away, they are hard to find in thick woods /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
They also are great for walking sticks when going up or down steep hills when they are snow covered.

I like the ones that I make from fiberglass electric fence posts spay painted camo with about three or four castration bands around them, dont get much easier or cheaper than that

I personally dont like bi pods. I like monopods due to the fact they are alot easier to turn than to have to pick up when you have a predator aproaching. if i had to use a bi pod it would definately be the new pole cat system, they have a bracket that mounts to your sling stud, you put one mount on every gun and use just the one pair of sticks. These things will move any which way you would like them to.

Does anyone use the Stoney Point Tripod setup?

They look a little more inconvenient to set up. However, they seem like they would be easy to pan from side to side and they would stay put if you had to make a quick offhand shot.

I use the stoney point tripod and I like it a lot. It is nice to set it up when you sit down, lean your gun on it and it will stand by itself.

+1 on the stoney point system.Snap it on your good to go.
Bought a set last season, glad I did.I also like my home made sticks.Have a great day.

Hey Doc . While hunting last fall with Tony Tebbe he introduced me to some shooting sticks which greatly increased my shooting ability . Works great for steadying your shot which allows for better placement of the kill shot. The brand i use know are PredatorSniper Styx checkthem out. www.predatorsniperstyx.com /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My favorite sticks are the ones made by Verne Howey. They aren't "crossed" sticks at all. Instead they have a bridge piece across the top, and a swiveling inverted "U" on top of the bridge. The bridge makes them more stable than any crossed type sticks I've ever used, and the swiveling U makes them far easier to pan a rifle side to side than any other sticks I've used. I think they are a better mouse trap. I bought mine direct from Verne, but last time I checked, AP Jones at allpredatorcalls.com was selling them.

Here's a couple pics with the sticks in them:

I bought a Caldwell bi-pod for my .22-250 and will never use anything else. It attaches to your front sling mount.

Lightweight aluminum and glass-polymer.
18° of Cant(tilt) in either direction.
20° of swivel without repositioning legs.
Prone Adjusts 8¾-12" in Height.
Sitting Adjusts 14-30" in Height
Folds forward when not in use.

Only drawback is price- $85

The Verne Howey sticks are handled by the folks at E.L.K. calls and they look pretty sturdy.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Looks like mama has more than one choice for a birthday present now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The easiest is to get the Fiberglass Electric Fence posts from Tractor Supply. Then get the appropriate Size Gas line and cut a hole near the center. Spray paint the sticks and the gas line and slide the sticks inside the hole going in opposite directions. The Paint makes the rubber stick and lubricates the gas line as the stick slides in the first time. Now you can camo them.

I use the Stoney Point rapid pivot. Works well for me. I especially like the fact that it attaches to your gun like a socket. Just pop it on to use it and pop it off when you are done.
