shot placement with shotgun

I was wondering where to put my bead on a coyote? I was thinking probebly right behind the shoulder like a deer, yet I was told by someone to aim for the neck. Which shot would put a dog down the fastest with #4 buckshot? Im new to coyotes and to me they dont seem all that durable and pretty much a hit anywhere would kill them, but I want a nice clean kill. Please tell me where you like to aim with a shotgun.

Not the case.

Coyotes are tough critters...I've seen numerous cases where a coyote has been rolled multiple times with a 12 gauge buckshot load, and after they do a little roll and tumble, they keep right on trucking if it's not a vital hit. Even if they do get hit in the vitals, I have still seen them run aways before falling.

On a side note, I only use a shotgun, when 'pushing' coyotes, with mutliple guys. In this case, most shots are on running coyotes, unlike when calling, a lot of the shots will be stand still shots, which is why I like to use a rifle.

When using a shotgun, if it's a longer shotgun range broadside shot(40+yards), I will try to aim in between the neck and chest area (basically the shoulder area), in attempt to get pellets in both the neck as well as it's vitals. If the coyote has the afterburners on, I will aim a bit in front of it's head.

Hope this helps.

I hit them square on the shoulder broadside, or, if close enough right at the base of the skull. Going away is not a good shot opportunity with a shotgun unless pretty close. Even then be prepared to shoot again quickly.

I have always gone for the head and neck like a turkey with second choice being the standard behind the shoulder deer type shot. I've had a lot more positive results since I went from 00 Buckshot to #4 Buckshot and an extra full choke. I have made the Texas Heart shot on flushed coyotes at close range and had good results but I've always had to pump in another round to put them down for good.

First thing is too patteren your gun/load to see where it is shooting. I like the neck/shoulder/lung area. If up close, head!
