Shotgun on a deer stand?

Running deer tight cover , and buck shot killed the deer just fine. Now imagine you only had one projectile to throw at the blurr you just described. Slugs have their place as does buckshot they are different tools that exccell in different areas.

I have been hunting deer here in Iowa with a shotgun scince I was 15 years old, and have killed a pile of them at anywhere from 10 feet to 150 yards. For well placed shots that result in clean kills, slugs are the way to go. We are not allowed to use buckshot, and I dont doubt its killing power at close range, but a slug is a more precise tool for the job. Rogge

Shotgun for deer...

I personally haven't shot a deer with a shotgun, But...

Last year my buddy came out to the house to go hunting. It had been raining so I told him that he could set in the barn and hunt out of it...since I had already gotten a deer from there. So anyway.. he used a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag with a turkey choke and 3 1/2" 00 buckshot. He shot the deer at 50 yards..he did shoot it twice. But the 2 shot caused it to do a back flip. Nice buck. So I think a shotgun, properly patterned, with a well choked tube (full, x-tra full, or turkey x-tra full) will do the job. If you get a good shot. But I would stay 50 yards or less.

If I were to hunt with a shotgun though, I would use a fully rifled barrel with one of the Winchester Supreme Slugs or the Remington Copper Solid Slug. And a properly sighted scope. (if it is legal to use slugs where you hunt).

But I know buckshot is lethal. You just have to know your limits, how the gun patterns. And be a good tracker since buckshot deer do not bleed out like a deer shot with a slug or rifle.

Good Luck

PatternMaster choke tubes pattern buckshot very well. While I haven't shot 00 (can't use it for deer here), I've shot #4 buckshot (Federal Premiums) and am totally impressed. 100% pattern in 30" at 40 yards.

A family member one time shot a small doe (with a slug) and when we skinned her out there was a bunch of little bruises in about a 9 inch circle on her ribcage. We figured that someone shot her with buckshot, and at fairly close range to have that tight of a pattern, but the inside of the ribs weren't even bruised. After that I told myself that I would never use buckshot. To each there own tho. I'm sure there are many people that would disagree with my hunting practices.
