Shotgun patterning. (40 yard target added)

I have read and read and read through GCs above sticky about shotgun patterning.....I have tried every way to find something to come close as to what everyone else seems to be getting. But I just have not found it yet... So far I have shot Winchester 4 buck, Hornady magnum BB coyote, and hornady magnum coyote buckshot, All of the above mentioned loads were less than stellar to say the least. All loads also were 3". There's not a whole lot to choose from around here....have to order most of the time...: I found 4 boxes of Remington 3" 4 buck locally yesterday. I couldn't wait to try them out...weather is terrible here today so I got out to shoot a little at 30yards. Couldn't shoot any further today due to weather. But so far this is the best I have gotten of all the loads I have tried. The circles that are colored in, do not count as that was a previous shot with a dead on hold. I have to hold a tad high with this shotgun. I know it's an eyesore to look at but basically what it is is a 4.5" circle in the center with 5 hits, and a 10.5" circle with 16 hits. Counting for 21 total in a 10.5" circle. Again this was at 30 yards. I know I have more work to do at closer and further distances but would you more experienced shotgun guys call this serviceable? I'm not exactly looking for that magical 70 yard coyote pattern. I just want a solid 35-45 yard killer. That's about as far of a shot as I get around here most times anyway.

Go easy lol

Personally that seems like a good tight pattern for 30 yards. What are your trying for? Distance wise. I shoot Remington 3" 4 buck and Heavy Coyote T shot out of an 18" Benell M4. I use an extended choke with a .677 restriction and I get your pattern at 40 yards and a 26" pattern at 60 yards. I put an 8" pie plate in the middle of my pattern target and I'm happy if I get one or 2 pellets in it at 60 yards. It only takes 1 to kill a coyote bobcat or fox. My 2 cents

I honestly don't think it's acceptable. But again. I don't know chit from applesauce about that stuff. Was hoping GC would shed a little more light on the matter

Can't try differnt chokes. It's an 1100 mag with a fixed full

However I don't believe in the 1 pellet kill either. It may work it may not but I'm not gonna put a lot of faith in it.

Gary... I have not shot a Coyote with a shotgun yet. For one reason. I have not yet found a load that will accurately kill at "My" comfortable range. 40 yds and beyond. I did however try the true glow sights. Fully adjustable rear sights. It looks good on cardboard, it is yet to be seen on Coyotes. I will keep you posted.

So if you were to lay a coyote on top of that pattern, how many holes would he have in him? Looks like he would be shot all to pieces, eh?

my experience tells me 40yards is about max. I like 30 and under better. if you keep that pattern from the shoulder forward. i would guess you would have no problem. I try to get most of my shot in their head. with the shotgun if they are moving I keep shoot'n. one #4 buck in the head will probably do the job, but one some where else in the body you got a runner.

Grant- I'm not sure if I wanna go the adj sights route....I have used just a standard bead for so long now that's just what I have gotten use too. I killed a cat with this shotgun a few weeks ago but Iet her get so close I think I coulda done it with a slingshot lol. Keep me posted on what you figure out and good luck!

Keith- I agree... A coyote would look more like Swiss cheese than anything....but I'm just thinking. Possibly overthinking. I figured with 41 pellets I would get more than 21 in a 10.5" circle at 30 yards. Maybe I'm expecting too much and like I said overthinking this.

Old cat- and that's really all I need is a 40 yard reliable killer. Any furher than that and I'm packing a rifle. I need to get this out to 40. I would love to see what it brings to the table at 40 yards

Just a thought. I sent my Winchester defenderl to Carlsons Chokes and they threaded my barrel for 30 bucks. Then you can screw any choke on it you want

Now that is a thought.....recently or is that many moons ago pricing lol?

Gary I have found that using just the bead site that I didn't hit where I wanted. I would have had to remember where to aim. Just like with a scope, if it is off? What good is it? I don't want to remember to "aim high right" or anything else. I want to know where I am hitting. Everyone has their own ideas. These are only mine. Good luck Bro!

That was about 2 yrs ago if my memory serves me. I'm pretty sure it was around $30 plus shipping both ways. Price is not listed on their website. Gotta call.

my pattern would have to be worse than that before I had barrel threaded & thin wall chokes installed. you may never get that good of a pattern again

Grant- using the bead dead on I don't hit where I aim either. I shoot low. But with a slightly higher hold it centers up. Kind of a PITA but....

Critr Gitr- I agree. If it would hold close to that to 40 I would call it quits and hunt that load from here on out. I could be content with it. Like I said above. I still have various distances I need to shoot at...I ain't done yet. I just hope I'm getting warm.

Cat- I'm not crazy about sending the barrel
off either. I could always buy another barrel if I can't get a load to shoot how I expect it too

getfoxy, 3" federal premium upland load of copper plated BB's worked very well for me on coyotes last 2 winters. it's loaded with 1 7/8th oz shot. a real magnum payload that packs a lot of punch.

anyways i bought a full case of it this spring. way more shotgun shells than i will shoot in the next 10 years at coyotes. lol

if you want to try some of this ammo i would sell you a box for exactly what i have in it. it figured out at $37.00 per box to my door. these are 25 round boxes. btw, the other day i was looking around and saw this same ammo is over $40 per box from the same place i got mine from. just thought i would throw it out there for you to consider.
