Hey guys I just got a brand new Beretta model AL-2 handed down to me from my grandpa. I am pretty sure it has a non removable full choke in it, which means i can't use steel shot with it? Anyway I just wanted to check with you guys, can i use steel shot or not?

Forget the steel shot with that one. I have the AL-2 Beretta that came with a manual for the A300 so it's not much different. If you got the 30 inch full barrel it makes a great upland gun. The barrels will interchange with those from the AL-1, AL-2, A301, A302, A303, And Browning B-80. There is a 20 inch slug barrel for it too. I have 4 barrels for my AL-2 and 3 are fine for steel shot. You can use 3inch chambered barrels but not the 3 inch shells. The A-300 came in 12 ga 2 3/4 inch only back then. The link below has a little history on the model. In good condition, they are a great little shotgun.

Thanks Jim, but i don't see a link but would love to read about the gun. Ya mine is chambered in 3 inch and has the 30 inch barrel, but i will have to look into another barrel so i can go whack some geese with it. Whoops its an AL-2 it just came with the 300 manual. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Sorry about the link problem.
The drawings in the A-300 manual are not quite correct for the AL-2.

I put a link showing my youngest daughter shooting my AL-2 this last summer here in South Dakota. If she looks like she knows what she is doing, it's because she really does. She shot a shotgun for the first time when she was 17. Six months later she won the local trap club's High Over-All Women's trophy for the winter league. She shot 16 yard, 20 yard handicap, and doubles in the league that went from Thanksgiving to the middle of March.

What kind of condition is your AL-2? Mine looks like nearly new but I bought it in 1968. I'll bet I have put 15,000 shells through it with no problems, till this year. I broke a carrier latch spring and I made a few spares to last until way after I'm history.

I just helped a friend sell his 20 ga AL-2 with 2 barrels. If I didn't have 10 Rem 1100's I would have bought it. His was 95% and sold for $450.

Congratulations on the new shotgun.
One option you have is to cut the barrel back to 28" and have a screw in choke system installed by a gunsmith.
Just a thought......

Another option would be to have the choke opened up to about a modified. That should permit the use of steel shot up to about #2 ....... if you use the slower loads, those under 1400 fps.

But, using steel shot in any older gun is a risk. The best choice would be to have it choke tubed and use extended steel shot suitable chokes.

Hey thanks everybody for the suggestions, i think i will look into what it will cost to have it cut and threaded. But it would also be nice to keep it original and just buy a new barrel for it, so i will have to see.

Jim the gun is brand new with only a couple box's of shells through it. I was just wondering if you could give me some info on some of the barrels you have for yours, or maybe just some links where i could look at them. Thanks!

That one sounds like a real jewel. You couldn't make me do anything to the original barrel. I talked with Stan Baker about installing screw chokes in mine, but he advised against it. He knows more about shotgun barrels than anyone I can think of on the planet. Cutting it off is a bad idea period. Reaming the choke out to a modified would work to some extent if it's done by someone like Stan. I found my extra barrels at gun shows and on ebay before they went Liberal.

I did quite a bit of looking around for a barrel for you but the only thing close is mine. They used to go new for around $180, but they seem to sell for closer to $300 with 3 chokes now, if you can find one. You might find a beater somewhere that has a decent barrel you could have re-blued for $35. It would make a good parts gun if it was the AL-2.

What I have is a like new Beretta Magnum 30 inch, Mobil Choke, Vented rib, 3 inch chamber, Matte finish, barrel with 5 Mobil Chokes. I also have a Browning B-80 2 3/4 inch chambered, 30 inch Std Invector barrel with 4 Briley X2 Chokes that I use for hunting and clays. I don't like and can't use 3 inch shells, so I might be tempted to sell the Beretta barrel or make you an offer on your AL-2. Do some searching and see what you can find and get back to me.
