Shotgun Review: Benelli SBE2, Browning Gold, Beretta Xtrema

Well, not a shooting review, just a hold and feel review after getting back from the gunshop(s).

I got to feel out all three guns, and have to say the feelings are mixed. Shooting them would obviously help out tremendously, but short of knowing someone that has each of these...it's just not an option...so all I have to go on is feel and opinions from those that do have them on this and other forums.

My thoughts...

1) Benelli Super Black Eagle 2.

PROS: Super feel, nice checkered grip and forearm, very sleek neck, thin and your hand just seems to melt into it. Definitely the lightest of the three and that is very noticeable to me when shouldering, snap shouldering the gun and getting on the bead. Sight plane is spot on, like the rigid rear incline with a sharp plane to the bead. Just seems to fit right while carrying or shouldering. I also like the camo options on this gun best.

At first I felt like the long receiver was a little TOO long. But I think that takes some getting used to. I was gribbing the rear 1/3rd of the forearm at first probably because I'm used to a more traditional short receiver. But as you get used to putting your hand up farther, it seems to seat the gun in your shoulder better, more solid. So mixed at first, but in the end, I think I like it.

CONS: The Inertia system seems to be questionable. I spoke with two gunsmiths and several gun salesman. One gunsmith told me he has seen the SBEs jam, in fact said out of 6 guys geese hunting in Alberta (maybe?), he had the Browning Gold and they all had SBEs...his was the only one NOT to jam. Don't know to take it with a grain of salt. The other gunsmith with him (both of these guys are very good gunsmiths BTW), said he too preferred the Browning Gold, and would also take the Xtreme over the SBE. So that put a wrench into the equation...I figure gunsmiths have seen and shot far more guns than I have, so do you value their opinions? Another salesman told me, he too likes the Browning Gold over the SBE because of the recoil factor. He said it kicks like a mule, but the benefit of the SBE is the lesser cleaning need (more forgiveness in elements) and that generally when you are shooting at animals you don't feel the recoil...it's only when you are doing repeated shooting like patterning at the range...so he thinks it's moot and feels they are both great guns, he just prefers the Gold.

1) Browning Gold.

PROS: Very nice in the hand, nice finish, little more meaty of a stock, forearm, and neck. Reduced recoil with the gas operated receiver. Nice fluid gun, beautifully well made and feels just solid and sturdy in your hand. The SBE almost feels a little plasticy/cheesey compared to the Browning...but they are quite different guns.

CONS: Really the weight and the camo options. Can't do much about the weight, but I feel it's a marked difference from the SBE. According to the gun salesman, the gas operated recoil system/piston requires attention to cleaning (as all guns do, goes without saying) otherwise it will fail on you over time. The ports can get blocked, the piston can get gunked up, etc...so he said as long as you keep it clean, it won't ever fail on you. This is only a CON in comparison to the SBE, which doesn't require as *much* attention to cleaning detail due to its recoil system.

One other con was the front bead. It's a slimmed down bead and for me at least made acquiring it and being confident you were in the right sight picture a little confusing/off. I'd probably swap this bead out with a bigger one out of personal preference.

3) Beretta Xtreme.

PROS/CONS: To be honest, I didn't spend much time with this gun. For me, the grip felt far more bulky, the stock and the forearm also felt far more bulky. Just out of preference, I don't like a bulky/big feel, so I didn't spend a lot of time with it. With the limited time I had with it, it did feel, look, and hold solid and appear to be very well crafted....just not my taste.

OVERALL:

So overall...here I am...caught between the SBE and the Gold. My gut tells me I wish I had the SBE with the gas operated receiver. I like the feel of the SBE, the camo options, the weight of it, the sight picture, the whole nine just seem right. The gunsmiths also are in my head about the SBE jamming, but everything I've heard about them is they are about as failure free as it gets.

Ahhh what to do, what to do...more thinking to do is what! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Feel free to chime in with any thoughts/opinions to help guide me a bit more! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Thanks all.

Benelli M4 Inertia operated with gas assist.

I have a Browning Gold hunter in 12 gauge and one in 20 gauge. I have fired 1000,s of rounds through the 20 without any cleaning. Shoots and feeds everything I feed it. Have not tried it with the 12.

AviD,

First and foremost don't believe the salesman! No I am not a hater...

I own an SBE I and never experienced any problems with it.

BUT,

I got an Extrema 2 with the KickOff from my better half for my birthday! However, withat been said I have never shot a Browning Gold but have shot the Winchester SX2 and SX3.
In my humble opinion the Beretta Extrema 2 is the best shotgun out there for ME;
1. superior finish (Aqua rust proofing) much better than the SBE.
2. Very simple gas system design.
3. Like having immeadiate access to the recoil spring.
4. Very soft shooting (SBE kicks a hell of a lot more).
5. Optima Plus chokes.
6. Overbore barrel.
7. Very easy to disasemble (not as easy as the SBE)
8. More reliable than the SBE (although I never really had problems with the SBE).
9. The straight rib works better for me.
10. It patterns well and it fits me very well.

11. The Beretta is a EXPENSIVE!!!!!

I hope this helps!!!!1

Great feedback, keep it coming!

crapshoot...what are the main differences between the M4 and the SBE2 from a user perspective (not just from a spec perspective)?

I honestly couldn't tell you . Byron South has the M4. I fondeled it and carried it to stand, but never got to touch off a round. I have never fired an SBE II. I have an M1S90. The M4 is a tactical shotgun and comes with ghost ring sights.

Bull$hit. Plain and simple. Ask those clowns how many Browning Golds are in the hands of the elite military and law enforcement agencies of the world? You know the answer to that don't you... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif The Benelli inertia system is known the world over as the most reliable semiautomatic shotgun system yet to be invented. The Benelli IS in the hands of the best soldiers and cops the world over. I do not speak of the SBEII however. The M1S90 3" version of the Benelli has proven reliability for many years in the absolute harshest conditions the hunting and combat arenas can dish out. If the Benelli feels that good to you it is a no brainer.

I have a sbe2 and a m4. Both are great but the gas operated m4 will shoot anything even 7/8oz loads and never miss a beat. The sbe2 will not fully eject the 7/8oz all of the time.

If looking at the M4, be aware that the make 2 barrels. One is for light loads only. Im not up on all the technical stuff, But Byron can fill you in when he gets some time. There was also some talk of this on the Benelli forums some time ago.

This is what the gunsmith was saying, 1oz and 7/8oz will hang up...but in all fairness, he said the Browning Gold also hangs them up but not as much. Again, what I was told, I have NO experience hands on with any of these guns.

GC, hehe calm down over there buddy...I didn't say it!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I am going to go with the SBE2...just feels best to me...although I'd like to check out the M4 as well.

Cool thanks for the heads up! I'll read about the M4 tomorrow sometime!

One thing I am seeing on the Benelli sight right off the bat is that the M4 (and maybe all other models) only come up to 3"...either 2-3/4" to 3"...no 3-1/2" models.

Is the SBE the only 3-1/2" model Benelli has?

Their site is all flash driven...although pretty, navigating it can be tedious...didn't see a snapshot view to compare all guns anywhere.

My hunting buddy has an SBE I and has shot thousands of light loads through it and has never failed. It has only jammed once with heavy 3 1/2" shells. Other than that, it's been perfect! GREAT GUNS!!!

Doc, trust me...you have more rifles than I do! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And I'm splurging here...probably more than I should, but I'm a firm believer in buying something that will last a lifetime and that I can depend on when I need to. With all the time and money I spend on licenses, permits, stamps, clothing, scouting, preparation, gas even...the last thing I want to do is have my weapon of choice (or any other piece of gear I depend on) fail at the moment of truth. I've never been good at settling on anything...so I try my best to get what I want...and if I can't at a certain time, then I'll save up for it.

Money comes and goes, but often times you only have a few seconds to make memories that last a lifetime! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Haha that was cheesy huh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I also just saw the SuperNova has 3.5"...so I should have qualified as being are there any Benelli SEMI-AUTO 3.5" other than the SBE?

My experience is limited I owned a Montefeltro 90 and had to send it back and the service from Benelli was horrible. It took me 7 months and several phone calls and emails to get my gun back and then they blamed me for the problem. I won the fight but it was an aggrevation.A good friend bought the SBE and it kept hanging and misfiring so he took it back. I have several other friends who own Benelli and they have not had any trouble at all.I think they make a good product I just hope you never have to use their service dept.

Another odd thing.

Looking at the Browning Gold, it's 7lb 9oz or 7lb 7oz depending on the camo (???).

The SBE3 is 7lb 3.2oz according to the specs.

But in person, it felt like a world of difference.
Weight distribution difference maybe equating to the perceived balance difference?

I felt like I could run with that SBE all day but the Gold would weigh me down. Weird.

You guys kill me that always jump on the Benelli/Beretta band wagon. I for one shoot thousands and thousands of rounds a year with shotguns. Yes, I am a clay shooter but in doing so I love to watch all the guys come out with their field guns and shoot. I will tell you this with absulute fact! They all will jamb under the right conditions. The Browning Gold is as good as any of them, period. If your looking for reliability, go with a double or over/under. Those two, and the singles are the most reliable guns in the world.

The commemnt about the elite forces of world is what is BS. Look at our own military, do you think they carry the absulute best in the world? No, they carry what met the specs, testing, and who gave the best bid. Don't kid yourselve GC, the world doesn't operate like that anymore.
