Shotgun/Rifle combo

Anyone have one of these? If so, do you like it. I have done most of my calling in the day with a rifle, but I want to try nighttime. I am thinking a 12 Ga. over 223 with a see-thru scope mount topped with a 3x9. Sight the scope for the 223 and use the front sight for the 12ga. I have a Lightforce scope light to top it all with. I know Remington makes one and I think Savage. Any info would be appreciated.

ex-nay on the see thru's, go with a 1.5x4, or 2x7 scope and keep it on low power, I've used a valmet 412 12/223 w/loopy 2.5x8 for years on turkeys and predators, go with the remmy, you can at least regulate the barrels to shoot to same POI with the remmy, the savage doesn't have that capability.

I agree with RR, I have a Bakail 12ga/.223 and I had a set of see through mounts on it. But it made the point of impact from 25 yards to 200 yards about 6 inches. So I took that off and went with just a scope mounted down on the barrel. I sighted in the .223 to the scope and the shotgun hits pretty much in the same place. This gun has brought down several coyotes for me. I love it, for the country I hunt it works great.

See through mounts are a neat idea, but nobody has yet to make a quality set. Do not waste your money or time. My Dad wound not listen to me, he put some on his deer gun. The gun shoots really well, but with those tip ups he cannot hit the broad side of a barn. Someday, someone will produce quality STEEL or Titanium see throughs, until then leave them alone.

I have a Sabitti(made in Italy) 12ga/6.5x57R. The 12 ga is on top of the 6.5 barrel. Set trigger for the rifle barrel, 3x9x50mm European Leupold (30 mm tube w/German #4 reticle). A really pretty gun, almost too pretty for yote hunting. Monte carlo stock and engraving on th side plates. The 6.5x57 has ballistics almost identical to the .257 Roberts and is very accurate. Haven't shot any coyotes with it yet. Starting in January, this will be my first year hunting yotes, but this should do the job. I had it at the range yesterday working up load for Lapau 100 gr FMJ, not to damage the fur too much. I had one group with three shots together in one hole. The other loads all grouped about an 1". Actually I done more shooting at the range thn in the field with this gun and it shoots just about very bullet that I have tried at 1" or less.

Thanks for the info guys. You've talked me out of the see-thru mounts. I didn't know Bakail made a combo, I will have to see if they have a website.

Baikal makes the Remington Spartan over/under and still makes them in other combinations than Remington offers. I have a Baikal .22 lr/20 ga (IZH94) I bought earlier this year imported by European American Arms for $400. I am trying to find a gunsmith to rechamber it to mag which will make it a great fox/bobcat gun.

I also bought a Rem/Spartan .223/12 ga today for $550 because I couldn't find a Baikal in that combination. The Baikals are a little rough, but well made and shoot well. It will be interesting to see if the Rem has made any cosmetic changes to the gun. I'm in California and can't pick up the gun until 1/7/07, but it should be in tomorrow to take a look at. The 20 ga weighs 7.5 lb and the 12 weighs 8 lb.

Shooting singles will make you think about your shots a bit, but I love the combo. I have only hunted cottontail and jackrabbits with the 20/22 and it works great.

Forgot to mention that I'm using an UltraDot30 red dot sight on the 20/22 and it works great. But of course, I'm not shooting the .22 at 200 plus yards as I'm hoping to do with the .223 and will have to play with a red dot and a 3-7x40 to see what works. People are claiming 75-yard coyote kills with the Heavi-Shot 12 ga Dead Coyote loads which is about what I consider maximum distance for rabbits with the 20/22.
