Should I be watching my upwind or downwind?

I call with the wind in my face but I also like calling a crosswind. If I'm calling with someone we'll try to set up where at least one of us can see downwind if possible.

Yes, I hate to lose animals I've hit, even coyotes. I looked for him for 4 hours. I looked especially hard since it would have been my first suppressed coyote.
I shot one yesterday (Saturday) morning so I did get my first one since I put my suppressor on about 10 days ago. I shoot 60 grain vmax out of a RRA AR. I hit this one good at about the same distance. The exit wound was almost 4". It was the shot placement, on the one mentioned in the story above that caused me to lose it, my bad. Here's the pic of my gun and the one yesterday

There are really way too many variables when it comes to how you setup. I feel like I to get the best opportunity to take fur on any set I avoid calling into the wind. Many have pointed out that predators will work the wind. I'd say on 90% of the dogs I've killed in the last two years have worked the wind on me. Depending on the speed of the wind let's say above 10-15 mph don't call into the wind. Your call will not be as effective because it simply won't carry as far, also if the animal is bunkered up nearby and your call gets its interest of course it will work the wind! Then you've got your back to it. If you want to optimize your chances of knocking down some fur I'd say face down wind with a nice vantage point on the land if hand calling. If you are calling with an e-call set it 30-60 yards in front of you wind blowing the call down wind the cross wind set up. I don't call a spot I think is hot if the wind isn't in my favor. Those animals are smart for the most part occasionally you run into a dumb one but those guys are usually few and far between unless they are youngins. At the same time you can ask all the people you want for advice, but I'd say go out and make your own opinion cause most of us all like different methods.

On a windy day I would probably try calling directly down wind so the sound will travel further. Lets say during a coyote calling tournament when there's no other choice but to hunt that day. But on the other hand the harder that wind is blowing the faster that coyote is going to wind you while its coming in. That's happened every time I've called down wind and a coyote came in. The wind was hitting me in the back and hitting the coyote in the face. They turned around and ran with the wind. Everyone has their preference but for me its easier to try and stop them before they circle and catch the wind.
