Should I get the .17 Remington

bea175,

I would be very interested in what powder you end up using with the 30 berger. I'm thinking this will be a good bullet for coyotes in the 17. I did not find a load that grouped well with them in my older bdl. but they are showing some promise in a new cz. I have tried AA2700, Varget, and H414 with this bullet in the cz. The H414 is giving some groups just under the .5 mark. Varget and 2700 didn't do so well.
I'm sure there are some better choices I havn't tried and the factory cz is in no way comparable to the excellent work Darrel Holland does.
I have had good luck with Varget and 4320 with the 25's in both rifles.

bea175-- Hard to say what's going to work good in your rifle with the 30 gr. Bergers. In my 1/9" twist 4-groove Lilja barrel the 30 gr. Bergers didn't shoot too good if I tried to push them much faster than 3,780 fps. I had some very nice small groups using N-540 and H4895, but velocities for the several powder weight charges that were accurate only gave me from 3,580 fps on up to 3,780.

This same Lilja barrel shoots my 30 gr. HP Starke bullets into itty bitty groups at just about every speed from 3,650 fps on up to my coyote load which gives me a 3,900 fps muzzle velocity.

I'm hoping I can get some of the 30 gr. projectiles to work real good in my new Pac-Nor barreled .17 Remington project.

I tried to find a couple of pounds of N-540 but know luck , everyone was sold out. I was thinking of trying H4895 and Win 760 first. I went with the 1&9 to use the 30 gr but will try the 25 gr later.

bea175-- The WW760 has been a good powder for many reloaders using some of the heavier .172 caliber bullets. I'm going to give WW760 a try with the 27.5 gr. Hammett softpoint bullets.

Can't remember if I mentioned this before or not, so I'll just type it in anyway. I did try a few loads with the 30 gr. Berger LTBs and H4895. I used 21.5 gr., 21.7 gr., 21.9 gr., 22.0 and 22.2 gr. of H4895 in some test loads I shot back in the fall of 2004. The highest muzzle velocity I got out of the H4895 loads was 3,650 fps. The N-540 loads gave me a bit more velocity as I mentioned earlier, up to 3,780 fps, I got decent accuracy, but not what I would call GREAT accuracy.

I'm guessing that the H4895 was a wee bit too fast a burning powder for these heavier bullets??? VVN-140, VVN-540, Varget, WW 748, WW 760, and AA 2700 are all slower burning powders than H4895 and may suit the 30 gr. bullets a bit better.
