If you really need a passport fast, you can get one in 2 days, but it'll cost you about 350. You Fedex the paperwork, and a guy in Washington walks it through the State Department the next day, Fedex's it back that afternoon, and you have it the next day. Don't have his info off the top of my head but I've got it somewhere if you need it. I had to do it when my company sent me to work in Mexico for the first time on 1 week notice.
 
A cheaper way:

When you go down to the post office to apply for your passport. You can pay and extra $75 and get it expedited in 2 weeks.

I would strongly recommend you do this. With the new laws going into effect, they are probably being overwhelmed with applications.
