shrouded muzzle brake

I thought about something similar a while back, haven't gotten around to trying it though. I'm still debating whether or not a shroud will actually prevent muzzle rise since the gasses can't expel upwards to push the muzzle down.
 
Browning or one of their competitors has been putting them on their rifles for a time. They don't look like that, but on theirs you twist the brake and it closes the holes. This one is cooler.

*maybe* it still reduces recoil even without the gasses counteracting the recoil. That's as good a guess as I can come up with. Similar to people shooting suppressors saying it softens recoil.
