Sidearms--Who here carries a pistol while predator hunting, and what kind?

I realize various state game and gun laws will differ and dictate what a hunter can carry as a sidearm--My question was really raised out of curiosity and a recent viewing "Hunting the Night Shift" varmint video in which Randy Watson dispatches a wounded bobcat with a pistol...Cool video sequence...

Just curious on how many of you carry a sidearm while varmint-predator hunting and what do you carry?

Thanks.

I did do a search on "sidearm" in this forum and no results were returned...

Glock 23

Same as I carry when I'm not hunting.

Oregon Law was clarified not too long ago that DFW does not have the power to restrict the type and caliber of arms that you can carry, since Orgon has provisions for both Concealed and open carry. They can of course restrict the calibers you are allowed to HUNT with, but you can have on your person any other firearm which it is legal for you to posess. Oregon has premptive law that prevents any lesser regulatory bodies than the state legislature from making restrictions on firearms sronger than the states.

There is of course the stupid law that prevents me from posessing a loaded weapon even with my CHL while riding an ATV. We tried to get that changed not long ago, but our dems in the state legislature shot it down pretty quick. Seems ridiculous that I can carry my legally concealed gun loaded in a car, but not while riding an atv.

I carry a Ruger 22/45 with a 5 in. bull barrel. But I always try to do my part so I don't have to use it to finish off an animal. When I am deer hunting I carry my S&W .38 special.

1911 in of course .45 ACP. Works great for predator too
close for scope problems. And 230 gr. ball ammo is fairly
fur friendly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks Leon.

Great site-especially this firearm board--several knowledgeable helpful folks here.

I carry both a Smith & Wesson combat modified 9mm 5906, and when I need ultra concealment (under permit) I carry a Colt Defender .45 ACP.

Especially after watching that bobcat try to take a chunk out of Ol Randy Watson's arm, having a back up gun for tracking cripples makes sense...

When I am not concerned about weight, I will take my Ruger .22 revolver. These mountains around here are getting bigger so I try to watch how much I am carrying. A rifle, ammo, spotting scope, binoculars, video camera, digital still camera, water bottle, knife, hatchet, something to chew on and basic survival gear in the pack is enough. If I can't kill'em with the rifle I am carrying I guess I'll just get et. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

i carry a ruger 357 when i'm deer hunting. sometimes it gets obnoxious, and i quit carrying it. i have a lot of respect for guys that hunt with revolvers. takes a lot of skill.

Here in Idaho I never carried a pistol unless I was out in the woods, fishing, handgun hunting and backpacking in Bear country. Now with the wolf re-introduction and such things as several murder kidnappings in this part of the country I got a CCW permit and the little Taurus ultra-light 38 snubby goes with me about everywhere.

Darn shame the country has came to that. I have one of the light Taurus 41 stainless Trackers that goes with me on deer and elk hunting trips. I've had occasion to have to put one more in a wounded deer (not that I've shot) and the revolver is much easier for a close shot than a big rifle.

I carry a Glock 22 (.40 cal) when I coyote hunt. I have only used it once to finish off a coyote. I shot a coyote at about 35 yards with a shotgun. The coyote was wounded and made it to a rasberry patch. I got up and went to finish it off with the shotgun, but it had not ejected the fired shell all the way. Instead the shell dropped back into the ejection port, causing a jam. (My Mossberg 9200 does not like 3" shells.) I finished the dog off with the Glock.

I've had dreams of taking a close coyote with the Glock, but haven't had a good opportunity.

I carry a Ruger SBH 44 MAG 4 5/8" with 2) shot shells and 4 middle of the road power 240 grain flat points. HATE SNAKES!

I hunt Pdogs , but I have on me or very close by a Springfield compact .45 or a Colt "Border Patrol" issued .357 mag.. The badgers are what worry me and an occasional drunk Wyoming Cowboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I carry a .40s&w at the moment, lots of lions on my side of the state,(they honestly come through our back yards during the winter, and i live a half a block from a childrens park)this is thanks to the left side of the state whose three metro countys carry the voting power in the state. ...blue

Kimber pro carry in 45. Were together more than me and the wife /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif...the way it should be! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A Smith and Wesson model 340PD 357 Magnum honestly never leaves my pocket. It is sooooo light at 11oz that I forget it's there. I have been eyeballing a Colt 6" Anaconda at the gunshop though.

I have carried several different sidearms over the years. Some would be: Freedom Arms 454 casull,Colt Anaconda 44 Mag,
Glock 23, Rossi 357 Snub, and more recently, I'll carry my Springfield XD 40 sub compact with nite sights, at times.

When after Coyotes, I carry a S&W 2.5" .357 Mag revolver with factory loads, if I'm going west in the summer for prairie dogs, the first three rounds are filled with bird shot for snakes.
