Sierra 1340

I've heard a lot of good things about Varget and the 69 grn Sierras. Worked my way up, (counting backwards from my desired ending load based on my reading (25.3 grains is the Accuracy load Sierra publishes).

I tried them in my RR PP upper (8" twist, 16" bbl) 2 stage Geiselle SSA-E, billet lower from New Frontier Armory.

The end result was the best shotgun pattern I've ever seen! 5" at 100yds. Hoo-weee!

On the other hand, the other load I had worked up was 22.7 grains of X-Terminator pushing 52 grain Hornady BTHP #22495 at just under 3/4" at 100yds.

Does anyone have any good tips (other than work up a load) for the 69 grain Sierras?

Thanks!

25.3 varget is the exact load i use and is extremely accurate.
do you target shoot alot?
i start out at 24.7,24.9,25.1,25.3
vary the distance to lands,.005,.010,.015,.020
my savage groups a little over 1/4 5 shots at 100 yards
my remington 700,tactical 16.5 inch barrel 1/9 twist,69 sierra bthp, still tuning a load but so far about 1/2 group at 100 yards 3 shots, gonna load up some more and do 5 shots next time
dont give up on it
also with the remington,reloader 7 and sierra 52 bthp,1/2 groups,so far

My pet load is 25.2 grains of Varget at 2.26" COAL with BR4 primers. Shoots .6-.7 MOA consistently in my BCM 16" 1:8.
Like the previous poster said, load up another batch and try again; different brass, recalibrate the scale, zero the calipers, clean the barrel, load on Monday, who knows!

I also shoot some of the Barnes TSX bullets and after shooting 25 or so of those early this fall, my SMKs didn't group well again until I scrubbed my barrel.

69g sierra, 24g h335= .580"
23.5g h335= .430
24.5 varget = .450"
24.5 w748= .700" in my bolt gun, all 2.230"col.

Great! Thank you! I loaded exactly to 2.260" and used Federal AR Match primers. First time I've used them, I may go back to the Winchester SR primers.

"different brass, recalibrate the scale, zero the calipers, clean the barrel, load on Monday," I'm glad I'm not alone...

My gun did not shoot that good with varget and the 69 smk tried some IMR 8208 xbr tack driver now might give this powder a try

The most accurate load I have for that bullet is 26.0 gr of Varget. In my Savage 10fp that load will make one ragged hole at 100 yards. Best shooting .223 Rem load I ever shot. I did not fool around with length, whatever the book said is what I used.

As always work up to that load, what isn't to hot in my gun may be to hot in someone else's.
