Sierras are pretty "explosive" game bullets IMO.
I've seen a few in action, mainly .257", 7mm, and .308" versions.
Every Sierra gameking I've shot into wet newspaper has lots its lead core. I stopped being surprised by that a long time ago. They do kill deer and coyotes very very good though. Sometimes you get an exit, sometimes you dont...They have a very soft jacket and plus the boat tail doesn't help the bullet hold together any better, IMO.
The core lokt is heavier and a flat base construction, so penetration should be greater, as you've noticed. Also the impact velocity of the 150g is going to be higher out to 300 yards or so then the 180g. That also does not help the expansion/penetration of the soft 150g gameking.
I have however shot the 180g CL from a 300 WIn mag and was less then impressed with what I found in the wet newspaper. The 180g CL was flat as a pancake and weigt retention was about 45-50%. Not any better then a gameking in other words..
If it came down to it, I would rather use a gameking then a core lokt anyday of the week.
A better comparison for you would be to maybe take the 180g gameking instead and compare it to the effectiveness of the 180g CL. Comparing a 150 vs. 180 is like apples and oranges almost..
Anyways, at the working velocity of the 06, the 180g CL is a great bullet. AT magnum speeds, its no better then a ballistic tip or a gameking though...Best of luck to ya!!
