Sierra 52gr HPBT #1410 out of a swift

Has anyone used this bullet in their .220 swift? I am patiently or should I say impatiently waiting for my new Cooper to get here and I decided the best way to do that is buy a bunch of reloading components for it! I've enjoyed reading through some of the older posts on loads for the swift. Maybe if anyone has and loads they want to share they could add it to this thread as well. I'm open to all types of discussion on bullet selection. I have a good idea of what I want to shoot out of it but I like hearing what has worked for everyone in the past. If there is such a thing with a swift I would like to get a load that doesn't totally destroy every hide from a coyote. They are just too dang pretty to leave big holes in them!

Judd Cooney, a writer for FFG and other magazines, is always real enthusiastic about that bullet in the swift. Don't recall any load data he has written about, but I am pretty sure that is one of his favorite bullets. He has always considered it a good 'fur saver' combo, IIRC. If I find an article with data I will let you know.

boandme, jerry blair used a 52gr bullet in his 22-250 for coyotes and he saved the pelts. I tried a hornady 53grhp in my 22-250 and it splashed on the rib cage of the coyote. spike

I completely agree. I switched to the 52 gr Amax in my 22-250 a few years back because they group just a little better than the 52 sierra. The 52 Amax is not fur friendly whatsoever but I'm not trying to save every pelt. The 52 sierra has always been an accurate fur friendly bullet for me.

I'm sure someone is going to come along and proclaim "those are for paper punching not hunting you morons!!" Don't listen to them, LOTS of people have been shooting them for years. They don't just "pencil" through like a few special people constantly try to claim!

Why heck yeah! It has been one of my very favorite .220 Swift bullets for 40 years! My very first all in one pinky size 5 shot group was obtained with that bullet. I even remember the price of the bullets. $3.85 per 100 at Carter's Country in Houston. They were well worth almost an hour's pay back then.

I have taken quite a few ground squirrels with them but really dont care for them much on prairie dogs because the critters blow up much better with a Vmax or a Ballistic Tip, but for coyote they might be great. But you have to hit them before you can kill them and good accurate bullet that Sierra is. Be happy with them.
