Sierra Bullet Question?

I need some information. What is the difference between the Sierra Pro Hunter "pistol" 80gr softpoints for a .243 and "rifle" bullets?

As far as I know the pro hunter is a hunting grade rifle bullet and I was not aware that Sierra made any handgun bullets in 6mm.
I have used their 100gr pro hunter and 55gr blitz king in .243 with good results.

Me too. Where did you see these bullets? I can't seem to find them.

The Pro-Hunter is a rifle bullet. This is what their web site says, but they don't list the 243 in a 80gr Pro-Hunter just in the Varminter.

The traditional, flat base design of the Pro-Hunter® has been skillfully blended with Sierra's world-famous accuracy. Our custom-tapered Pro-Hunter® jacket design helps assure maximum expansion, optimum weight retention and deep penetration for game-stopping, one-shot performance.

Sierra has produced various bullets for use in single shot pistols over the years. They typically have a very thin jacket and are made to expand at the lower pistol velocities.

Yep...

I'm thinking all the Prohunter rifle bullets are either roundnose or flatpoints.

The PH bullets made with ss pistols in mind are spire points......

ProHunter's may be spitzer shape also, but they are the flat base bullets in the Sierra line.

Seirra does have designated pistol rounds ( mostly for the thompson center) that have a thinner jacket for a consitent upset with the shorter barrels. They list these in there reloading manual, the only one I took note of was for the 7mm-08, but I;m sure there are others.

Some of those pistol bullets will not stay together in high velocity rifle cartridges. They tend to vaporize on the way to the target. There are always exceptions, so try them and see.

Ok, so I should NOT use these for shooting coyotes or deer through a .243 long gun then? Is that what we're coming up with?

If that's the case, if anyone is looking for 6mm single shot pistol bullets I have a box of 100 for sale.

You are right, Pro Hunter are flat base, Game King are boat tail, I would not shoot them from a rifle. ed

Yep. That is correct. Prohunters are all FB, SGKs are boat tails.

I was just trying to distinguish between the 2 different kinds of PH bullets......

I killed a lot of coyotes with a custom 6mm and custom 243 with 12" twists shooting over book max loads of IMR 4064 with Fed 210 primer with the 80g Sierra Single shot pistol bullets, they are amazingly accurate.

I have a few boxes left if anyone is interested, send me a pm.
