Sierra bullets

Why are they so much cheaper than Hornady , berger, nosler? I found where you can get 100 Varminters for $9.99. All the other brands of varmint bullets are $15and up for 100.

Sierra knows how to make bullets.
They have made more quality bullets for more years than anybody else. Sierra bullets have won about 90% of the National Championships for at least the last 20 years. True, some custom makers can make slightly more accurate bullets, but only at much higher prices.

I just checked Midwayusa, and the Varminters are $9.99 and the same type of bullet in Hornady (sp) was $8.49.

They are both standard softpoints.

You may be confusing the Varminter, which is a plain soft point, with the Hornady V-Max which is a polymer tipped bullet - better design, more explosive, and more costly.

If you compare apples to apples, the 50gr Hornady V-Max is $10.99 and the 50gr Sierra Blitzking is $13.79.

The equivelent Hornady (in both cases) is lower in price.

Both are equal in quality.

I am a Hornady V-max fanatic and the Sierra bullets are every bit as good but they just don't blow up praire dogs as well. I must second the fact that Sierra has GREAT customer service and bullets

I will third the great customer service, quality, and acuraccy. Sierra makes a great product /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

For most of the years that I've handloaded I've used Sierra's.
Great bullet of choice.

Just since the advent of the Hornady Vmax's have I changed, and as a polymer tipped bullet, I feel they're excellent regarding performance vs. price.

I have, and use, a large supply of all three polymer tipped bullets (Hornady, Nosler & Sierra), but I've had more consistent accuracy & performance with the VMax's. Noslers are probably very close, but their price offsets my choice.

The longrange round has never used the 168.

The M118-LR round has used the 175 SMK since the beginning.

The M118LR has used the 175 grain Matchking since that bullet was developed (and it was developed by Sierra for the military, as I understand it).

Prior to that, the long range sniper ammo used the 173 grain bullet. Maybe Catshooter can tell us who made the 173, as I don't know.

The military does use the 168 grain ammo for match shooting, and it's good out to 600 yards. The "LR" for "long range" designation of the M118LR refers to a round which is capable of good accuracy pst 600 yards.

when i went thru 2nd mar div (stone bay) sniper school we still shot the 175 smk,but shortly after that we got the new 173 hollow point boattail longrange round.the 168(m-852) is a smk as well and is the military match round

I use Sierra as my benchmark bullet for accuracy testing. Also shoot Nosler, Speer, Hornady, and on occassion Barnes.

Me too! Except I haven't tried Barnes yet.

Hey Catshooter, Why are you all over everyone correcting them? You have corrected two people in this single post. I don't think that Derek Theobald and CreekHunter are here posting false information just to have something to talk about, cut these guys some slack go with the flow. Thruth be known, they may have some information that you could learn from if you would listen instead of rebultling every comment that you think may be untrue. Evveryone, we are all here to have some fun and enjoy each others comments, lets keep it light and have some fun.
