Sierra MatchKing Bullets

Has anyone ever used these bullets for groundhogs or prariedogs? I know they are not really a hunting bullet but I figured with headshots and a hollow point, they should work fine. I got good accuracy out of my .22-250 using the 52gr. HPBT bullet but won't be able to see how it works till the g-hogs come out. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

I use an 8" twist 22-250 with 69 gr MK's that are "rough" on prairie dogs - I would try a box of the 52's if I had a "normal" twist, I'd bet they'll work just fine!

I have used 69 SMKs out of a .223 on prairie dogs.. They are super accurate bullets and they definitely kill the dogs.. But.... If you are like me and believe that carnage is what makes pdogging fun, I would go with a Blitzking or V-max.. Not to mention that all of the Hornady and Sierra ballistic tipped varmint bullets between 50 and 60 grains have a better BC than the 52 gr. SMK. More carnage and better ballistics.. That's a win win in my book..

We used these bullets for years in a 1:14 twist 22-250 on rockchucks. A stout dose of 4064 made them very shootable. "Mist in the scope". This was pre vmax days. Another bullet used was the 52 HP Speer.

The only time I used the 69's on PD's, the misses zinged across the prairie. I'd be careful and sure of your backstop. Vmax's are cheaper and more explosive anyway.

I normally use Nosler 50gr. Ballistic Tips bullets but they didn't group well out of my one .22-250 but the MK's did. I bought a new stock for it so that might shrink the groups with the Noslers.

We shoot the 52 grainers at coyotes with awesome results.

You'd be surprised at how many guys use these for coyote hunting.

I've never had reliable expansion with the Matchkings and woodchucks/groundhogs. There are better bullets for varmints including the Berger hunting VLDs if you want a low drag bullet.

These are the only bullets that I load for my 22-250, 14 twist. 70% of my coyotes have no pass through, over 60 coyotes in the last 20 years, not good for saving fox pelts. Few runners with most if not all being my fault. Get a lot of nickle groups at 100, hair off landings. Have no reason to change until Wisconsin outlaws lead

Thank you! I keep seeing it more and more everybody recommending the 69 gr or 75 gr .224 bullets. Yeah, they have a great BC and can shoot a long way.

However, a miss goes a long way using these. I much prefer a varmint style bullet that explodes on contact.
