Sig Mosquito Review

So I picked up a new Sig Mosquito a few weeks ago knowing that they had a bad reputation for being un-reliable.

First impressions:

After shooting around 250 rounds through it last week it lived up to its reputation of being ammo picky. I had fed it some Federal bulk 525's, CCI Mini Mags 36 and 40gr (Worked flawless.), Golden Bullets, Federal bulk 550's, Federal Gameshock 40gr. Accuracy is not bad as far as I am concerned, surely not a target pistol but thats not why I bought it. The reason I bought it was because I feels and functions just like its bigger Sig brothers. The slide cycles smooth, the mags drop free just as they should and again it feels just like its bigger brothers in your hand. Should make a perfect training pistol.

The trigger does leave much to be desired in double action. The pull is long, very long and very stiff. The single action pull is much better, there is a fair amount of creep but not much over travel, still a bit stiff but not horrible.

Here is how the ammo did the first time out:

Both of federals had either fail to eject or fail to feeds about 5 in 10 rounds. (Short stroking.) Would lock back on the last round 50% of the time. The Gameshocks fared a bit better 2 in 10 failed to feed.

The CCI Mini Mags both shot flawlessly. Locked back the slide every time.

Golden bullets had fail to feeds about 1 in 10 rounds, all rounds ejected but about once a mag it would short stroke enough to not load the next round. Locked back on last round every time.

Golden Bullets ran good maybe 2 in 10 fail to ejects. Locked back slide no problem.

The second time on the range:

I started out with the CCI's and shot the crap out of it until it was starting to short stroke form all the powder fouling on the slide and bolt face. (About a full box of CCI bulk Mini Mags.)

I gave it a real quick cleaning, re-lubed the slide and firing pin lube hole on the side of the slide.

I then started to run every thing I had available in it 60 rounds each, the results almost amazed me. I had two fail to fires with the Federal bulk 550's and one fail to feed with a Golden Bullet but I attribute that to a mag issue. I ran about another 500 rounds total and had no fail to anythings. So a good break in is definitely worth the time.

My conclusion:

Anyways, anyone considering one of these little Sigs fear not they are great little guns after a good lubing and a short break in time. If your looking for a good target pistol you might want to pass on this one and jump on the Ruger Mark II or similar weapon, but of your looking for a great plinker this could be the gun for you!

The Ammo:

A few of my 50' groups: ((First is a 60 shot group other two are 30 shot.) Also never claimed to be a great pistol shooter!)

A guy i know braught the same gun over a few weeks ago. It jammed like crazy with the federals too. I told him to get some cci's. the federals seems to run like crap in most auto .22's

A buddy of mine bought one of those awhile back and it was an absolute piece of crap. He took it back and got his money back. I cannot believe that Sig would produce something like that. It does not help their reputation any.

Sig is up front about the little Mosquito right in the owners manual. They are built to shoot the CCI mini-mag. Mine also shot Velocitors like a house afire. As far as accuracy goes, a game warden buddy of mine made 8 of 10 hits with the little Mosquito on a B27 silhouette target at 100 yards. Needless to say, he IS a good pistol shot.

This is exactly true, it specifically says in my manual to shoot CCI for the first 500 rounds. I believe this to be because the CCI have a little more oomph than any bulk pack. Also Sig has admitted that the chamber is a hair tighter than it should be. After things are loosened up that bit it shoots everything very well.

I'm glad that you said this here, because this is a hot button topic with me. The Mosquito does NOT have a bad "reputation" for anything, it's just that people can't read. I tell people everyday that it even says to use mini mags in the owners manual, if you don't heed the advice of the manufacturer, it's your fault, not the guns.
