Silencers / Suppressors and supersonic cartridge sound levels

I *think* the size of the crack is going to depend a lot on the actual speed of the round. The big boom is not just the breaking of the barrier, but the barrier collapsing behind the bullet. Faster bullet/bigger hole, larger collapse.

I think of it like 2 boats. Small boat going slow makes small V shaped wake behind it, big boat going fast, big wake. IF the wakes were compressed back into standing water behind the boat, the big fast boat would have a more impressive wake.

Very True. But still not that much noise compared to that coming from the can.

The vacuum theory is a convenient way to think about it. But it is important to realize that the sound is not produced in this way. Here is a cute cartoonish representation that does a pretty good job:
Standing Waves and Sonic Boom

All I know is when I was a kid and the jet airplanes would break the sound barrier , it was like dynamite going off in the distance and the windows would rattle and every rooster pheasant in the country would go to cackling....a chorus of roosters......no more sonic booms and most all of the roosters gone too.
