Silly Question - Anyone use knee pads?

At the risk of sounding like a wimp, I never did like setting my knee on a rock while trying to get a better angle for a shot, but I've always put up with it. Well, a couple of weeks ago I took a line drive off my knee, and kneeling is now an issue, as I can hardly set any weight on it, just as the calling season is getting warmed up.

My question is does anyone out there use kneed pads? If so, what do you use? I've got a pair I use for roofing/carpentry type work, as well as a pair of shin/knee guards I use for dirtbiking. I've tried both out, and neither are quite right...particularly for walking.

I have been scouring the skateboarding sections at stores, the home stores, dirt bike stores, etc. There are several out there that look like they would work, but some of these are not cheap, and simply using the trial and error method could get costly.

Anyways, just asking for your thoughts on this before I plunk down some money. Thanks!

I some times use elbow pads they are soft and don't off circulation as bad. You might give them a try and don't cost a hole lot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

I don't think any knee pads feel natural when you first start using them..

My old knees are in pretty bad shape from years of abuse and a lot of my competition shooting requires going to a rapid kneeling position.

I tried some of the cheaper 'contractor' types, which would have probably worked okay if I were moving slowly, and wound up getting the more expensive units made for the "SWAT" teams from a LEO supply company.

Initially, they feel pretty stiff, but they are double padded with two different densities of rubber and the 'velcro' fastening straps are stretchable and after about 10 minutes, I forget I'm wearing them...A natural boost in adrenaline helps as well... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ive used them while trapping years ago because of checking traps all day and actually used them this year while ground hog hunting, I have them in the truck for calling and plan on using them soon. Mine are some I bought for construction they have a hard plastic cap on them dont feel to bad.

Give them a try at home before you head out in the field just a suggestion

I have never worn a pair that was comfotable while standing or walking.. just kneeling. I you find some, let us know!

I use them at work, best value are the foam ones. The more expensive one can be nice, but once the strap or hook up goes bad they are useless.

I carry a gardener's kneeling knee pad from Home Depot in my calling daypack to sit on. It is cheap, about 3/4 inch thick closed cell foam; warm, dry and comfortable under the rear end, especially on wet or snow. I have knee pads also but never thought about using them for hunting. Hope that knee gets better.

Nope, passed the point of getting that far down on the ground a few years ago. I do have a turkey vest that has a nice foam sitdown pad and that's as far down as I can go and still get up.

I do envy you young fellas though.

I have a few pair of 5.11 tactical pants. There is a pocket in the knees for a knee pad. I'm not aware of the pads while walking or sitting. I am aware of them when kneeling as they are very comfortable.

+1

When the weather is warmer I wear my 5.11 pants with the knee pads in them.

Work well but the pants aren't the most breathable if it is too hot...

And when it gets cold, well I usually have enough clothes on to support my knees. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Turns out, it wasn't the silliest of questions.
Maybe thats what I need. I hurt my knee about 6 weeks ago and had not thought of using a knee pad.

Thanks for the input! I'm pretty sure that something athletic would lend itself most to walking. I think the reason I've been unsucessful so far is because much of that sort of stuff is in kids sizes, and I just need to look a little deeper.

I've used them on occassion, I used to spent a lot of time crash testing motorcycles and after a few years of that, kneeling down on most anything creates a great deal of discomfort for me.

I use knee pads everyday. I am an electrician and seem to be onmy knees all the time from in the van to on the floor deviceing. Go to www.skillers.com and check out their work pants. They have a built in pocket to insert a seperate kneepad which is AWESOME!! cell phone pockets and if you need a pouch to put ammo/ calls etc in, just lift out the attached pouch in each front pocket! black gray and brown duck canvas, they last forever. I had a bout with bercitus ( spelled wrong) and would not recommend it to anyone. 2 weeks out and x-rays and drain knee fluid. Anyone can get this by kneeling on the ground where dirt can enter and set the infection in progress.Pants are very comfortable.

Welcome to Predator Masters, Mogley.

The pants with the pockets for pads are great. I think they're available in mil-surp camo too.
