Simmons Whitetail Classic question

I did some firearm trading today and will soon have a Winchester Classic Stainless synthetic Sporter in 22-250 that has a Simmons Whitetail Classic 4-12x44AO on it.

I swapped a Wingmaster I got at a banquet that I haven't used and a little money for this rifle package which is also a banquet prize, that has been used very little.

Just have to tote the shotgun to the dealer and finish the transaction, I didn't have it along with me, aas I didn't expect to find the nice rifle.

Anybody have one of these scopes, what do you think of them.

My other centerfire scopes are Nikons, and I am not very familiar with Simmons.

I have a 6.5-20x50 Whitetail Classic, great glass for it's retail price of $150-$200, I'd expect the 4-12x to be a great scope too. The Whitetail Classic was their next to the top of the line, the top being the Whitetail Expedition. One of the few differences is the Classic has kind of a krinkle finsh.

I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic on my 22-250 VSSF for two prairie dog seasons now and it has been devastating on them.I purchased it from a mail order company for under $100. I plan on putting one on my 204 VLS in the near future.

Actually, the top of the line Simmons before the Whitetail Expedition came out was the Aetec. The expeditions were good scopes for the money, but extremely heavy. They didn't make it because nobody wanted to pay any more money for a Simmons than what an Aetec costs. There are too many other scopes with more reputable names that are in that price range. The whitetail classic is pretty much the same thing as the 44Mag with a different objective size and a different finish and logo. For the most part, the biggest problems with Simmons optics was broken reticles on harder kicking calibers. On some the adjustments are not exactly what they say either. In other words, either not repeatable or not 1/4" as stated. For me, as far as Simmons goes, you have the Aetec and nothing else. These scopes have a very bright, crisp image for the money. You won't find anyone winning bench rest competitions with them, but on most hunting calibers they work just fine. My good friend has a 44mag on a 22-250 Vanguard that I have actually used much more than he has. Never a problem, sub moa groups. I would be a bit leery about putting a Simmons on a really hard kicking rifle because, as I said, the reticles were a problem in the past. On your 22-250, it should be fine IMHO--2MG

I have a Whitetail Classic in 6.5 X 20 on my Ruger .204 Ruger and am very happy with it so far. If I had a complaint at all, is that I cannot find a sunshade for it.

I think the quality of the Simmons line jumped quite a bit when Meade Optics took them over. Meade makes some very fine telescopes, and I have used a few of them.

But no matter what, there is always gonna be someone who doesn't like them and will only settle for a high priced scope.

I wish I had the money to spend on the Leupolds and such but I don't. But the prairie dogs I see through the Whitetail Classic and then shoot don't know its a cheaper scope!

Well,

I got the rifle home today. Letting the bore soak with some cleaner as I type this, I figure around 6 pm or so I will take it out to the range and see if it is dialed in at all.

One thing I amy have to do is get a little higher rings for it, as it is so low to the barrel I can't get a lense cover on it, and I do want to keep the glass covered when not in use.

If the Simmons on there is good and clear and stays zeroed, it will stay on. I was not trying to throw off on Simmons, just trying to learn a little about it as I have not owned one before, that is all.

Thanks to everyone for the replys, sounds like if it hasn't been abused it will be a keeper.

Cowpoke--what I sometimes do is just take a dremel tool or whatever and notch out a small arc in the bottom of the lens cover. It let's me keep the scope mounted nice and low and saves me from having to buy another set of rings and remounting the scope. Being on the bottom, it is hardly noticeable--2MG

2MG,

Good idea, now to find some scope caps to put on it.

I suspect butler creek pop ups won't be an option due to the AO it might make for too big a dremeled area to keep the cap on.

Well...

I am going to have to get some different rings for it, just trigger higher.

When I got it so the eye relief is about right the front bell just barely and I mean barely clears the barrel.

First two shots overlapping holes, third shot off about an inch and a quarter to inch and a half and the barrel and bell are in contact from the barrel expanding a little.

At least I can say the rifle is a shooter and that I am very very happy with that fact.
