sks

Welcome to the board 98.
It will work but you will have to find ammo other than FMJ as it is not any good for predators. You will need to find some soft point as the hollow point surplus is just the FMJ with a hole in it. Not good for hunting. I think that Winchester has a hunting load in the 7.62x39

It will work OK for close range. I have a neibor who claims his SKS with a bayonet is the best deer rifle made. He missed a chance at a big buck when he was taking a dump with his gun leaning against a tree out of reach. With His SKS he unfolds the bayonet and sticks it in the ground in front of him. He has a good point. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My SKS was a great rifle if you wanted something that would go boom full of mud and [beeep]. But at 100yards it would hold about 6 MOA. I am not sying it wont work it WILL kill them if you can hit them but I have no respect for this firearm because of its accuracy, its simplicity and functionality however I do greatly admire that aspect of the weapon. I guess that would be my opinion on 95% of military firearms though.

Have never used the milsurp HP , but here is a hog that went down to a wolf 7.62X39 HP. Complete penetration with a near golf ball size exit hole!

We killed several others with Barnaul HP ammo with the same results. Also you can buy Wolf SP ammo too.

I once loaded some 7.62X39 with 123 grain Vmax and it shot ok, but no better than the Russkie stuff.

I've shot about 7 different SKS rifles including Yugos, Russian, Chinese and Albanian and none were much better than 4 moa for me.

I've personally tested the Russian made Ulyanovsk M83 Effect 7.62x39 HP ammo and it fragments just like you'd expect any other high quality high velocity bullet to fragment. It literally goes to pieces. I'm sure I've posted a picture on here before. Simply awesome.

So not all the HP ammo is junk. I've heard that the Wolf HP performs similarly. It won't open up like a flower petal and peel back like a HP pistol bullet, but they DO fragment into pieces, which is perfect for varmints.

Is that the same as the Silver Bear "effect" with the little knob on the nose?

I cut one of those knobs on the Silver Bear open and it's pretty much a hollow point bullet with the knob over it.

I bought 500 rounds of the Silver Bear Effect but never used it on game. Shoots about the same as the other russkie stuff. Guy who sold it to me said it had the knob to make it feed better and that it was "match grade" ammo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's good ammo alright but no better than any of the other stuff out there and the price was right.
