Skunk tails.

Man, it’s year of the skunk around me! They’re everywhere and we have a few mostly white ones roaming around. Season opens October 25th.

I just don’t know if it’s worth it? My wife is a saint, and puts up with a lot when it comes to me dragging dead stuff home, but skunks??? I don’t know how many skunk tails it takes to pay a divorce lawyer and alimony!

So my daughter sent me a text saying she had a weird acting skunk in her yard last night. Said it was going in circles and wobbling around. Told her it sounded like rabies and to not let her dog out there. She texted again this morning and its dead in her yard. Sent me this terrible picture.

Mostly white tail skunk hides 80.00 on last auction, just don't see many around here. Double stripes, more black than white here.
We just have the normal 2-Stripe Skunks around here.. But I really not into cutting off their Tails ... LOL
What are they used for ? Sewn for decorative fir trim on jackets/coats ? This skunk in the Pic. here tonight is one of my favorites. Skunk Hair is long especially on the tail, but i don't think it really not thick or nice looking like Fir when it sewn.

From what I understand, it has something to do with those long white hairs towards the tail tip. I think the fuller those white hairs are, the better/higher the value.

Per Google AI…

Skunk tails are used for a variety of purposes, most notably for crafting a traditional Jewish fur hat called a shtreimel, and for materials used in fly tying.

Shtreimel hats:
The fur from skunk tails is used to make the shtreimel, a traditional hat worn by many Orthodox Jewish men on holidays and festive occasions.

Did not know that Skunk hairs had a fashion use .
I dont know what it is about their Hair and the way it is main design, but when you pet, scratch and rub and groom your fingers and hand threw the body Hairs on Skunks. The crazy wild thing is. Their Stink does Not stick to them.
You can put your nose down there and smell them, and they do have that very slight odor, but it NOT the BOMB Chem. Spray from the Gland, and it is not there on your hands when petting .

and its alive :)

Maybe a 110 Vmax out of a 300 Ultra Mag would save you the trouble of separating the tail from the skunk.....:p

They must be pretty smart around me! I’ve had a half a dozen live traps out and a bunch of dog proof traps for years and never caught one darn skunk! I have skunks on trail camera every once in a while, but they don’t want to have anything to do with my traps. Raccoons and possums are like mosquitoes though. I’ve caught hundreds of each of those. Out of all the decades of hunting I had one skunk walk by me bow hunting, probably 25 years ago and I called one in about 1030 at night trying to call coyotes. I must’ve got excited and missed the darn thing. It was literally underneath my tree stand and sprayed me when I nailed it with BBs then it got up and walked away. I thought it walked 10 or 15 yards in the dark and laid down, but I never found it. That smell stayed in my clothes for weeks.

IMO it would be like a 30 point buck if I ever got one…lol.

Drown them or cover the trap with black plastic trash bag and drag them out into the sun. Both ways kill them without them spraying.

Index that would be a 10$ tail, needs long white hair on the end to be 20+ $. Buyers are worried about a huge skunk harvest, flooding the market. Much of which is headed to China also. Buyers don't want to pay for hides, as the tails were the market. I know someone that took in 4 skunks last week ,2@10$- 1@20$ 1@30$.

and its alive :)

Ya it Alive, that particular skunk is on it 3rd summer old. Him and his brother from a Litter hang pretty tight. I walked out back door tonight, and whistled, he was around and he ran up to my feet. He was soaked wet when I was rubbing him, it pouring down rain here off-on tonight . That Litter 3 yeas back, he and his brother come from 'genetically' all had a Black Spot on the back of their heads behind the top of their white haired crown on top their heads. you can see it in the Pic. in above post.
But .. Years ago I used to try and get rid of all the skunks here, but it was really not getting me anywhere. I also don't really have a nice manicured grass show-Lawns to give a Crap about . So 8 years ago I decided we all would just get along, and I found out the ******* are actually pretty social and smart.

I been handling all the new born Liters born every Springtime of 1 or 2 females for past eight years in backside of property now. So all get to know me young. As soon as they start coming out of den to explore, they get me harassing them and grabbing them up handling them. when their small you just grab them by scruff of back of neck, and then scoop your other hand up from back to front. Holding them curled with that hand keeping tail curled in front of them. The babies pretty much relax around me, and also because their mothers all have already been around me and their all relaxed. I hand feed and handle them young so I always see them coming around the house even 3 to 4 years and remembering me, coming up to me for getting a snack.
Their pretty funny because they all got different personalities. There always a couple in every Litter that wired with the right personality, and would make a good house pet if you wanted to train up one.
Usually the funniest ones are the Runts. Their always the smallest, and always one in every Litter and they always run around all pissed-off, Their always little fighters, throwing little temper tantrum, putting on a a 'tough-man front' because they have always been hungry from birth and being the smallest have been fighting from the Tit from birth just to get feed.
I ALWAYS got to be careful in the summertime . The little bastards will be pretty relaxed running around here, and In summer I will lot of times leave the garage door cracked open because I have a shop built inside and keeps it little cooler with garage door up a few inches . Some of the Skunks are pretty smart, and they see me opening the back door letting my cats in and out once in while . and ( I know the Cats didn't tell them anything ), so Skunks even young are intelligent enough to figure out that the cats eat food inside. I have walked in the house a few time to find a skunk just Chowing Down at the Cat food bowl. They were smart enough to figure out, and run around to front of house from the back. sneak under garage door and go threw my shop up steps, and into the mud-room at back door where my Cats bowl is kept.

I usually see 4-5 babies running around for moms 1st litters. But the 1st year female this year had ( 7 ) . And Surprise Some Of these kittens had 'Black Spots' on back of the heads ...LOL . Always a couple dont make it from every Littler. Owls love eat baby skunk and we got a few Big Hooters living/flying around here at night. and also they get hit by Cars, dogs kill babies . Now Cats. skunk and cats for the most part tolerate each other, and I even see stray neighborhood area cats, or my cats eating sideXside with Skunks.

we counted at least 10 plus skunks as we scanned a local golf course. i let the owner know and he said to get rid of them. our only problem is removal from the course.

i'm not gathering up all those stinky skunks for disposal and the owner didnt seem like he wanted to either. he said to wait til spring, when the course isnt open and the skunks come back out.

any idea how to remove stinky skunks this time of year while the course is still open.

head shot :) last time i tried that on a farm, it still sprayed.

i thought about traps, but i would have to set them after dark and get them right after daybreak. wouldnt they still spray while being dragged to the waterhole
