slug gun hunters Hornady SST

I put together a long range slug gun and thought that the SST would be the answer to slug ballistics but I was not happy with the groups I was getting. They were acceptable for 50-75 yards but I was looking for 200 and they were too spuratic for me.

Why in the name of the Lord you would spend $3 a slug, and shoot them in a smoothbore, I'll never really understand. They, along with pretty much ALL sabot slugs, are designed to be shot through rifling.

My bro-in-law just used them to sight in his R870 rifled cantilever barrel, and got some very nice 2" or so groups at 100 yds.

I'd love to try them out, but I'm already dialed in with Lightfields. Maybe if I find them on clearance or something, I'd give them a shot.
 
I'm sold on Lightfield hybred exp!2 shots 80 plus yards and hit my mark exactly.Two really dead deer.Not much cheaper than sst's but very happy with results.
 
ive been using ssts for 2 years now, and never lost a deer. they hit hard and when you skin the deer you can see the damage they do. i got mine sighted in a inch high at 172 yards, and it groups them well out of my 1187.. ill never use a differant slug.
 
I use them as longer range slug. 2" groups at 175 yds. Awesome slugs for the money. I usually use Rem copper solids which are maybe one of the most accurate I have ever seen. 1" at 100yds for a slug is better than most rifle hunters (here in MN) would ever dream of.

Also, the 250 grain SST Sabots out of an Encore Muzzleloader....UNBELIEVABLY easy to load and ACCURATE!!!!!

Maybe he was using a rifled choke tube.


A bunch of us tried SST's but anything over 100 yards couldnt hit a pie plate consistantly with the gun on sand bags.
